    Advice
    buy a hardtail
get the best frame you can (this means a recognised brand ie secialised, giant, etc BTW the Giant boulder should do the job for you)
then when the cheap bits on it break, rebuild it with better ones.
as said before DONT buy a cheap full susser. it will put you off riding for life. think of attaching a pogo stick to your rear wheel. this bike will ride like that except it will feel like a dumper truck on a pogo stick. do yourself a favour.
Go for a low tech hardtail from a good manufacturer that is upgradable in time.
I never touched it! It was broke when I got here.

None of those are perticularly great bikes, and you could d better if you looked around a bit and/or saved up a bit more cash. IF you were set on one of those three then get the hard tail apollo, purely as sub £800/900 full sussers tend to be, for lack of abetter word, useless.

  • Did you suddenly get rich?

For £130 do not buy a full suspension bike. At that price range you will be better of staying away from bikes with disc brakes or suspension forks. They add weight and don't work but I have a feeling you're going to ignore this anyway.

Are you really interested in a £1000+ bike or are you taking the piss now?
  • thnx il take ur advice-i just realised i could only lift my front wheel aproximatly 3inches of the ground and it was a full sus i got from halfords wich cost bout £80- it was apollo fs.26 i think-but is the shockwave xt950 gona be heavy-its aluminiumed framed-apprenlty they use scarps of aluminum is it true? the hardtail is 7005 alumined frameis that better? im a total dumbass on bikes i had to google what hardtail and what a clamp fork was
when i get to halfords il take a look at both bike and put the front wheel up and see whats better-il look like a reatard but there u go : :D
  • MY APOLLO FS.26 LASTED FOR AGES BUT IT WAS HEAVY-THE BRAKES DIDNT FALL APART OR ANYTHING-NOT A GOOD BIKE-DEPENDS HOW U RIDE IT
  • 7005 is just a different type of aluminium, I wouldn't worry about that. You're not going to notice the difference. I wouldn't go near a bike with clamped forks, they just put them on the bike to look expensive and weigh alot more.. You'd be looking at a spending £200+ on forks alone for a worthwhile pair.
  • SO WICH IS THE BEST BIKE I CAN GET AT HALLYS FOR £130 :?: :?:
JUST TO LET U KNOW I HAD A APOLLO FS.26 WICH IS RUBISH BUT CUZ I HAD IT-IT LASTED FOR AGES CUZ I RARELY DO LONG DISTANCE AND JUMPS  I ONLY RIDE TO SCHOOL RIDE ROUND A PARK AND BLAH

They are all rubbish, do not buy any of them. Complete waste of money and look totally shit too. You'd look better walking and probably be quicker too.
  • Apollo XC.26S

I'd go for that one. Suntour make some reasonable forks although I can't tell what model is on that bike.

A cheap full suspension bike will be alot more effort to ride with alot of the energy when you are pedaling going into compressing the rear shock rather than pushing you forward. Google "pedal bob" for more info.
  • @coolanin7:

Look for bikes that have been reduced.
    Heres one:
    http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_219266_langId_-1_CarSelectorCatalogId__CarSelectorGroupId__varient__categoryId_111669_crumb_33980_parentcategoryrn_111669#
Seems better than the xc.26s , as it is reduced from £220.
Though i dont actually recognise many of the components.

Just remember that it wont stand up to any real abuse, and it isnt for jumping.
(It says dirt jump style bike - not dirt jump bike)

Also, for £20 extra (borrow it?), there is this:
    http://wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.aspx?Cat=cycle&ProdID=5360027211&n=Univega%20Alpina%20HT%20Sport%202007
    £150.
I personally think it is better than the Apollo's, and will probably be lighter too.
(anybody else please correct me if my judgment is wrong)
Free delivery, and comes ready to ride (apparently. Buy a set of allen keys and check before riding).
And its a pretty blue colour :D

Im not going to restate the point everyone else has made about buying a more expensive bike, because i think they've made that clear enough.
There is a MASSIVE difference between cheap and expensive bikes, but if you are just riding around and not doing anything silly, like jumping, then those two bikes *should* stand up fine. Maybe not the apollo. I dont trust those things :)

I dont really like giving advice on bikes, because i often fail.
Anyone else feel free to correct me ;)

End of essay. (Im ill and have nothing better to do)

I don't think that Shockwave bike was ever sold at £300, they just put on a huge max price and reduce it to make it look like a good deal. Wiggle, as well as all large online bike stores, deliver nationwide.

That X05s is worse than the XC26s imo, the XC26s isn't too great tbh but it's the best Halfords sell at that price range & is relatively good value for money. The X05s is a dirt jump "style" bike (as the XC26s is an MTB "style" bike) but the X5s has such steep frame angles it isn't very efficient, or comfy to ride compared to the XC angles of the XC26s.
I have worked at a good Halfords & the main things that broke on that bike were the bottom brackets which we would generally replace with sealed units if they were in warranty, or the freewheels, both of which are just outdated poor quality designs. But then again would you expect a sealed bb or a cassette as standard at that sort of price point? Worst part on the bike is the front disk brake & the forks are what you would expect for the money, if your lucky the new batches of XC26s bikes have an upgraded Suntour aluminum crankset, but that's a bit luck of the draw.
Personally I would buy the £172 Carrera subway if I had a tight budget & wanted a bike to get around on, or save for the Vulcan at least if you want an entry level real MTB.
Don't ever get a Shockwave as they are terrible (at best), I used to tell people this when they tried to buy them & lots would still buy them anyway.
As for that Shockwave having a lightweight frame, depends if you class a bike about 18kg as light lol it's the only bike Halfords sells that has a "2 people must lift this" warning on the box ;)

LOL thats nearly 40 lbs.

coolanin7 get your mind away from that shockwave or similar bike. They are marketed directly towards people like you who buy a bike on how cool it looks. If you fall for it you will end up with a terrible bike.

If you are stuck with buying something from Halfords in that price range then the XC26S is the one to go for. If you can stretch to £150 or £170 you can get a whole lot of more bike for your money.

To sum up. Don't buy a full suspension bike

    indeed.

if you need a shop to go to try a giant dealer and grab yourself a giant rock for £160.

Your other option may be to look out for a nice bike second hand, you could get a half decent entry level MTB for that sort of money if someone happens to be selling one.
    Giant TCR advanced 2 (Summer/race)
    Merlin single malt fixie (Commuter/winter/training)
    Trek superfly 7 (Summer XC)
Giant Yukon singlespeed conversion (winter MTB/Ice/snow)

  • The Univega bike i said is free delivery to anywhere on the UK mainland.
So yes, they will deliver to you :)

I would personally save up the extra £20 and go for it.
Or, like Dav1 said, look for a nice second hand bike.
  • BTW,
    Back to MY topic
Im still trying to work out what is a good price for a bike, every time I go into a bike shop looking for one tpye of bike the satff show me one that it a little better (and costs a little more). I keep on chaning my mind on what I want, and how much I should spend.

How much did everyone here pay for their bike, and how long has it lasted them ?

P.S. I going to see what bikes get reduced after Xmas.

I agree. My apollo FS 26 fell to bits after 2 months (brakes as well).

Halfords staff were stoned when I bought it as well which is why I took it home to be assembled.

    hahaha

  • man, this thread just needs to die......... but it just won't!!!
  • well we arent helping it die are we? Please dont buy a shockwave, X rated, Trojan, Probike, Crosstrax, Apollo etc for serious riding! Save cash, and get a real bike from GT,Carrera,Giant etc..or check paulscycles.co.uk for bargains! Also Halfords maybe having a sale on some premium bikes from boxing day.........................
  • I have a shockwave MTB..its ok for round the park and comfy hacks along the canal, but its pants at any off road stuff, the forks bang about and pogo loads and the rear shock tries to send you into orbit !!!! i 've done 6 miles round my local park on it today and i ve been bounced about all over the place.
Plus they are sooooo heavy, hillwork is like trying to climb everest on the thing !!!! BUT i am getting fit on it lol, ready for when my Merlin Malt 1 is ready :D
  • Didnt anyone at your halfords tell you it was useless for what you wanted to use it for? (just about anything) also which store you get it from?
  • Nope, they just took me money and gave me the bike in the box..nothing was said...wasted money there, but i might just use it to commute on..its ok on the road.
I didn't know any better when i went to Halfords, i was totally new and thick lol.
Got it from the Blackburn branch.
  • For gods sake, Halfords bikes are a joke as are halfords. If you really need to buy anything from them its best to research first then go in and ignore any pathetic advice from the fools serving. Any bike less than 250 shouldn't be classed as off road, its dangerous. Go to ebay and pick up an old but proven bike.
