Costa brava advice

I'm looking to put together a week or so tour in the Costa Brava in April or May next year. I'm looking to make it circuitous from Girona, and plan on it being about 50 miles a day. Anyone toured there? I've been on holiday, and it's a great place, but I have no idea what touring would be like. I seem to remember someone saying there is a hot dry wind that can blow down from the Pyranees. I'd be interested in knowing if anyone's experienced this, and would welcome any general advice anyone might have out there about the region.

  • April & May mid day temps should max at around 25C.

Avoid the red roads (on Michelin maps) which are generally very busy. But yellow & white ones are hilly instead.
  • I was in this area during September this year, although not cycling. I have cycled through Catalunya, entering from the Pyrenees in the west at Ripoll through Olot and Figueres onto the French border at Portbou and down the Costa Brava to Barcelona - very easy cycling.

You could start here with suggestions for week long tours from the first tour operator promoting cycle touring in Girona.

Chance to see the Terra de Remences road race in the first week of May west of Girona in the Volcanic Natural Park area. Click on galeria de fotos.

I flew into Girona airport, which for cyclists is great, its in the countryside and you can start your trip from here and immediately your in heaven!! I went from the airport to Santa Coloma, then to Sant Hilari Sacalm and then onto Vic where I stayed the night. A great ride. Then I headed south across the Montseny mountains to Sant Celoni, I spent the night down on the Costa Brava at Calella, hotels are really cheap out of season. The next day I continued up the coast to Sant Feliu, the section betwen Tossa and Sant Feliu is awesom. I tried the Via Verde from Sant Feliu to Girona, but I wouldn't recommend it, especially if your on a road bike, it can get rought and signposing is limited, in fact I got lost! When I found the tarmac again I was OK for dinner back in Girona. Contact me if you need more info.

Hey, thanks for that, Ian. Much appreciated. I'm trying to plan my route now, so your input was really well timed.
Do you know of any specific bike routes? My last tour was in Germany and it was great because there were so any dedicated routes that followed rivers. Anything equivalent in the area?

Sorry, forgot to ask, how were those mountains?
