Was doing ok with cycling Plus this month, till I got to the Paul Smith article testing the camagnolo centaur Ct 2008.....Then the alarm bells rang at the second part of the title,,..

"Campy's groupset updated"

Is this magazine aimed at the US market. As we know they use the term Campy when refering to campagnolo.....In the UK campag is the only term i've ever heard in over 30 years or riding. Besides campy is so naff sounding, almost as bad as shimano.

It's Campag, always has been and always will be.....

I'd rather walk than ride shimano.

Campag. It is the usual British abbreviation which I have certainly used since the 1960s.

Campy is the American abbreviation. Unfortunately we have a whole generation who eat/drink/seem to think American. So we hear a lot of "Campy" in this country.

If, and only if, C+ regards itself as an international magazine then the term "Campy" may be used if, and only if, that term is internationally more recognised than Campag.
  • campag. but usually campagnolo. campy sounds camp

    We don't like Shimano?

The long form is cam-pag-nyolo to pronounce, isn't it?

So campag is the proper abreviation, surely?

    It's got to be campag...

We have too much C*** from the US as it is without adopting the shortcomings of their language.

Talking of copyright....I think the Americans have a little help from Campagnolo in making them think it's Campy rather than Campag because they have copyrighted this logo...

Another one. My winter bike has Veloce components on it, which I pronounce

    vel-och-ay

as does the guy in the bike shop I bought it from. It's probably how it's pronounced in Italian. But people in other bike shops pronounce it

    vel-oss

By using the Italian version, am I just being a middle class twat?

Vel-oss is for thickos. Vel-och-ay is proper. I would still rather have Shimano than Campylobacter though :P

Indeed I've converted to Shimano, despite Ken Night arching his eyebrow at this policy decision. I prefer the click-click of the 21st century to the jammed clutch of a 1930s tractor.

On my Stars and Water Carriers video the announcer at the stage start in one Italian town calls up riders from the Bianchi-Campagnolo team. I'm sure he pronounces the name as cam-pan-yolo. I can't check at the moment because I've switched over to DVD and my VCR has been mothballed.

Also - Bianchi is pronounced as bee-an-kee not bee-an-chee!

I think I feel more comfortable saying Campag than Campy. Campy is a bit too Graham Norton.

If you don't, you should, it'd be entirely appropriate

I can't believe no-one has risen to this, and I'm not going to give you the satisfaction :D

  • This is a debate we must have.

Especially agree about the correct pronounciation of Veloce. You should correct those cretins in the bike shop, they'll thank you for it in the end. After all they wouldn't get away with calling Shimano 105: "Shy-may-noh one hundred and five" would they?

    Bloody Americans.

Shoe plates became cleats, wired-ons became clinchers, tubs became sew ups and they even think a fanny is somebodies ar$e.
  • Of course it's Campag!, campy is a reference to Graham Norton!

I was surprised to find that they still sold bikes with Campag stuff on the other day, I thought everyone had moved on.
