Will be meeting a friend (fit woman but not a diehard mtber) who lives in Oxford for a ride this Saturday, but last time I tried riding the Chilterns in winter I was drowning in knee-deep sticky clay. I am looking for a moderate and not too technical ride to take her on that will keep us away from the worst muddy bits. Some options that I have come across include:

1) Chilterns ride (Medium) featured in latest issue of Singletrack (pg 114)
2) Rides on this site (see below):

3) A ride I did some time ago in the woods between Wendover and Princes Risborough that I seem to recall got pretty muddy.

4) Off-road rides listed in Nick Cotton's book of Cycle Tours in Berks, Bucks & Oxfordshire

Ideally I am looking for either confirmation that one of the above options will be rideable this weekend or else links to maps of other routes, ideally with downloadable gps tracks.

Any advice would be welcome.

  • I did part of the hard and the whole of the medium at the weekend and it was fine. Bit slippy in places but put it this way - the post ride cleaning took about 5 minutes and TBH I could have gotten away without bothering!

After the rain this week it might be a little more slippery, but a lot of it is covered in leaves anyways.

Its a great ride. I might be there meself time permitting.
