I don't know about this particular route, but this is "end of season" for many sites.

"Wild Camping" may be an option, if allowed and you are comfortable with the extra equipment and supplies.

This list will give you some information:

There is one other thing you should be aware of though,. I read last year whilst loking atthis an an option for my Wife and myself that the "Cycle route" is no longer being promoted, rather shorter loops are now the emphasis. This should not cause a great problem, but do be careful if this is still the case.

I did a bit of this in the Spring and most of it is emphatically off-road and you will need a MTB and not just a tourer. You may know this already.
The sections using unsurfaced 4wd roads are just doable on 25mm tyres but unpleasant and gravelly.
A better option if you are on a road bike might be to use the roads on the south and east side of Loch Ness and join up at Ft Augustus (if you are going N to S). The Caledonian Canal section south of here is good if a little dull.
There are loads of places you could discreetly wild camp along the route and the midges should be over by then.

I would also recommend the E of L.Ness route - nice quiet roads. F.Aug is a nice wee place too, worth a few hrs / overnight stay - plenty B&B.s..

I rode parts of it on my recent LEJOG. I echo the comment about the rough gravelly surface - but it's doable on 28mm tyres. However, the towpath sections are absolutely fine (you can get from Invergarry to Ft Augustus). Also recommend the back road south/ east of Loch Ness at Ft. Augustus - a swine of a climb, but well worth it, and takes you all the way to Inverness.

I've ridden sections of it and found it rather dull. I was happy to get away from it and into the hills.

You certainly don't need a mountain bike. A tourer with 28+, preferably 32 tyres is fine.
