could be a daft question but can you put a double thickness of bar tape on to increase comfort? will it be safe? will bar tape stick to bar tape?
i hate hills (cos i'm fat)

Not a daft question at all. It can be done. A lot of the pro teams do it for cobbled races like Paris-Roubaix and Het Volk to give added comfort.
  • I always use 2 layers - I find it adds a lot to my comfort, particularly when riding on top of the bars.

    I always use 2 layers.
It helps if the inner layer has a shiny surface like bike ribbon, or the outer layer doesn't have sticky tape (I use Bontrager gel tape), so that you can take off and replace the outer layer without having to redo the inner layer
  • I use the 'Specialised Bar Phat Wrap' tape with gel inserts and often use another layer of tape over the top of that on my Audax bike, you might need to lots of the second layer to have enough or just do a second layer on the hoods like I do as that is where I have my hands most of the time :D

You can also get gel pads which go on the top of the bar, under the tape. I use them on my bar ends. That way, the pads are on the top so you get the damping qualities without the bar being too fat all the way round.

    Can't remember the name....Fizik?

    Fizik do it, also Marsas.

Regarding the OP, double tape is a good idea, as long as your hands are big enough to grab around it comfortably. If your hands are small, you'll just end up trading one discomfort for another.

Specialized also do a Bar Phat tape with gel pads rather than a gel layer within the tape. Rather than wrapping one over another, I just wrap the tape closer together i.e. half the roll from the bottom to the levers and hide the join under the hoods.

I tape a line of bar tape along the length of the bars on the top, and on the top of the hooks where my hands go, i.e. the tape lies parallel to the bars, not wrapped round it. Held on with some insulating tape and then normal tape wrapped over the top. Puts a bit of extra padding in the right places without making the bar fat.
