How do I get a google map to show elevation levels? I have to cycle from Maidenhead to Brighton and I want to know how many big hills I will be faced with.

Getting angry with technology!!

    Afternoon,

    if you use www.mapmyride.com

Click on hybrid (bottom of the map) to get the google display, plot your route (Ticking 'Follow roads' on the left hand side is useful) and then click on Elevation, also on the left hand side if I remember correctly, and voila, jobs a goodun :D

  • Seconded to mapmyride, but you don't actually have to click on hybrid to get elevation

    Try http://www.bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx

    1. Click on Auto Route Point.
    2. Plot your route.
    3. Click on Get Route.
    4. Wait for the elevations to download.
    5. Click on the Summary tab for the profile.

Then you can export the GPX.

If you have a GPX file of the route, then use http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/ to view the route or the profile.

http://www.bikely.com (which will be fully incorporated into BikeRadar) has elevation profiles.

I have a tiny little book dated 1959 with all the major road routes in Britain plotted as height charts. It's great.

Trouble is, it may just be out of print!
