More shorts help please

I have just started riding, and am finding I'm getting quite bruised / sore in the "beneath and behind" area as it were.
I guess some kind of padding is what is required here. I do not want to go the "in your face" lycra route.
Should I get some :
a) lycra shorts and wear them under baggy shorts / trousers.
b) padded boxers and wear them under baggy shorts / trousers
c) baggies with pop-in padded liners.

Any advice and short recommendations gratefully accepted.
