Giant SCR Question

Hi all,
My first post here.I am in the market for my first road bike and have pretty much narrowed the choice down to either the Giant SCR 1.5,which is the same essentially as the 2007 SCR Ltd.,or the SCR 2.My question is this: As far as I can see,the difference between the two bikes consists of Shimano brakes,Shimano Tiagra cranks,Shimano bottom bracket,and a carbon seat post on the SCR 1.5,as opposed to no-name brakes,TruVativ Touro cranks,Cartridge bottom bracket and alloy seatpost on the SCR 2.Is it really worth spending the extra £120 on the SCR 1.5 for everyday riding,or would I be better to get the SCR 2 and save the cash towards some better wheels somewhere down the line?

Firstly, I can recommend the SCR 2.0 as a perfectly good bike anyway - I don't think you'd be disappointed if you got one. On the other hand, if you're fairly sure you'll upgrade the wheels, and have a bit of cash in hand now, why not look at the SCR 1.0 as well? You'd normally get more for your money if you buy better components when you buy the bike, rather than adding them separately later.0

Id see if you can find a 07 SCR 1 on sale, I got one for £600 new. I really do think the scr 1 is noticeably better to ride than the SCR 2 that I had on a test ride.
Worth noting the SCR 2 was good enough to sell me completely on the range so really not a bad bike, but the scr 1 does seem a bit better to me on the braking and gear shift and maybe on comfort.0 -
Go for the SCR 1. I'm kicking myself for not getting it. As pw said, the extra cost is far less than a seperate upgrade.0

i believe the SCR2 takes full mudflaps, but does the SCR1 ??

Yes. The frame and fork is the same. Only components are different.0

The 1.0 gains a carbon seat post, which helps with comfort and dampening road buzz etc, the 105 gears are noticeably smoother shifting and the lighter weight wheels make a heck of a difference to the feel of the bike.
Both bikes will get from a to b, but the SCR 1 does so whilst accelerating easier, shifting smoother and with greater comfort. Ive ridden both and I am not at all hesitant at having spent the extra money. But I use my bike every day If im spending that much time on the bike something that bit nicer to ride makes everyday that bit better. £200 is nothing for daily transport over a couple of years, people pay more than that for a car stereo.0 -
Thanks for all the repies.I agree about the comments on the SCR 1,but I live in the Republic of Ireland,and would rather deal with my LBS if possible.Less hassle to go back to if things go wrong! My other option is to buy a Giant FCR 1,which has an all-round better component spec than the SCR 2 but only costs an extra 50 quid,and in a few months stick drop bars and Tiagra STI levers on it to make it a "proper" road bike.I could then flog the rapidfire shifters and Tektro levers from the FCR on Ebay.My other reason for this line of thinking is that the FCR 1 is a much nicer colour than the drab grey/black of the SCR 1.5! As far as I can see,the FCR and SCR frames are identical.0

Might be worth looking at the giant website to get the geometries for both the frames and compare them
Mind and weigh up all the costs veloboy. Drops, Tiagra STI's, bar tape with the possibility of a new stem/ cables/ and your nearly at 200 notes.0 -
You won't get much for the parts, while the cost of Tiagra STIs + bars will be significant. And then there's the hassle.... why not buy the racer in the first place? I got my first road bike a couple of weeks ago and I'm really impressed with it. It's the 2007 SCR Ltd, apparently sposed to be £650 but I managed to get it for £500!
