Old shimano Cassette removal problems

I have been given an old set of wheels and assumed that i could remove the cassette with a chain whip and shimano type adaptor (bought 2 years ago and serving me well until now)

When trying to slide the adaptor on it refuses to enter the cassette lock ring. The ring seems to have the correct grooves/channels but is slightly too small.

Have these changed in the past and does anyone know where i can find the correct adaptor?

    How many cogs on the cassette?? Isn't it a freewheel from Shimano??

    Its a 6 speed cassette on a free wheel. Like I said it looks like it should fit but is too small to let the shimano adaptor slide in tot he lock ring.

    Any ideas?

    the cassette tool is 23,4mm while the freewheel tool is 23mm both are 12 spline.

    you will have the FR5 tool (from parktools) while you may need the FR1?

    Sounds like you have a screw on freewheel, as Nicklouse says the FR1 should do the trick.
