A decent bus driver!

This morning as I rode around Marble Arch to Park Lane a bendy bus also came from Edgware Rd. He drove around the right side of the traffic islands and I went on the left - as he reached Park Lane he signalled left into the bus lane. He then effectively cut me off. I had almost expected this so there was no trouble I just slowed and then went down the outside.

The bus driver as he stopped opened his window and looked straight at me and said, "I'm really sorry I saw you as I pulled in and thought Oh Crap. I'm very sorry."
I had to smile and just say it's ok no harm done.

I find the bus drivers round by me are pretty good, I usually play leapfrog with the 508 from Leeds to Halifax and vice versa, getting hazard flashes when I let him/her pull out.

An exception would be the express buses, I think First give their most maverick drivers the honour of driving those. That X6 from is usually driven by a right git.

One extremely wet and windy ( gale force ) day I was cycling home along the coastal route when a bus pulled along side me. The driver opened the doors and asked ( shouted ) if I wanted to get on the bus as it was so wild !
I politely refused but thanked him all the same.

I have also had a WVM ask me if I wanted a lift, this was in a blizzard on the moor road home !
I also refused this lift but thanked him .

There are some decent peeps around.

The majority of bus drivers (for the larger companies at least) are very good. I often find a bus waiting patiently behind me a nice safe distance back. I thank them when I get the chance. Of course as in all walks of life there are bad apples.....[:(]

I had a bus drive wave thanks to me the other day. It was on the other side of the road and there wer parked cars on my side. I thought about going for it, but decided the bus was bigger than me and would hurt if I didn't make it, so I slowed right down let the bus go before over taking the parked cars. Bus driver smiled, nodded and waved his thanks to me.

I tend to find bus drivers OK on the whole - there are the odd or or two who could do with a slap, but they are relatively rare.

Whereas, in London, black cab drivers tend to be the spawn of Satan: miserable, aggressive, dangerous little sh*ts who shouldn't be allowed behind the wheel of a motor vehicle.

A nice Royal Mail truck driver gave me a wave of thanks this morning after I stopped and waved him on to reverse into the depot gate.

Yesterday a bendy bus started to overtake me on a slight uphill grade. I knew this would be a problem because I was riding at a similar pace and approaching a bus stop that usually has at least a few people waiting. To my surprise the driver saw that I was there and continued past the bus stop rather than cutting me up. The waiting passengers were annoyed but at least I wasn't squashed.
(edit: I was starting to slow down and preparing evasive action)

Today things were back to normal, probably to prevent me being tempted to start being positive about bendy buses.

Er, it's BECAUSE they're on the road for 12hrs that they regularly make mistakes, and getting to the end of their shift they are thinking about food, bed, shopping, or anything else other than the poor git they've just cut up.
I agree that the majority are fine, but there are so many that even a minority are enough to induce tarring them all the same.
Private Hire vehicles are far worse - it's easier now they have the 'special needs' badges in their windows to warn other road users about their limitations.

Having said all that, most of my 'noisy discussions' have been with non bus/taxis, and a twunt who was doing the knowledge on a squit scooter.

To keep the theme going, at the end of the cobbled road from the office, I meet a wide (4 lane) major road. Tonight I decided to go right and was quite suprised after a few minutes when a black cab (grey actually) waved me out. What a nice chap.

Must be the annual be nice to cyclists week- cycling down Tower Hill this morning by lights at top, a van ( & yes it waswhite was sitting in traffic with nearside wheels partly in cycle lane. The lane is wide here and no problem getting passed anyway.

however driver saw me in mirror and manouvered his van to his right to get out of lane and then put his hand up and mouthed sorry to me. I was so suprised, I nearly fell off my bike

i'd like to report an outbreak of nice bus drivers in oxford too - when one had just started to indicate to pull out from a stop, he saw me and hesitated. i slowed and gestured for him to go, and received a wave and a thumbs up in return.

We sometimes forget how many good and courteous drivers there are out there. An example of this is how long it is between incidents I've bothered to put on youtube from my video camera. That video camera runs nearly all the time I cycle, and most of the incidents I've recorded are actually relatively minor.

I was once escorted out of the middle of Birmingham (where hitting cyclists is a well loved pass time)by a French lorry driver who for the entire 1.5 miles we were together kept shouting "Tour de France, Tour de France..." out of his window. Weird maybe, but the sentiment was appreciated...
