Well, the new forum is almost upon us.

I logged in this morning after 5 days in Holland, to find an explosion of timewasting. The prospect of wading through pages of pointless arguing highlighted the fact that all the SS/cameras/car is king arguments have been done to death and to continue would be mindless. The facts are there, the agenda-led opinions will never change, and so there is no reason to all jump on the next troll that wobbles over to start the whole same story up again.

And I've been one of the major culprits. It's enjoyable and pretty easy to throw the obvious into the face of the other side and watch them try to play with words. But it's a waste of time.

So, how about a pledge to carry over to the new forum. No more tickling trolls, and we all keep each other to account?

I'll sign.

All right, just need to get a couple of things off me chest and then I'm there. Two more hours tops.

I don't eat newly created species of marine life, or even newly discovered species of marine life for that matter, but if I did eat any sort of marine life, I would use this guide: -www.fishonline.org/information/MCSPocket_Good_Fish_Guide.pdf

I'll definitely sign. In blood. Their blood.

I have two ideas; one is that we all get it all off our chests here and now, in the old forum, and never a troll shall cross in the new.

The other is that if we / you care that much, set up a whole site devoted to refuting the cod-science, laughable claims and general nonsense spouted by SS. It's easily refutable but IMO this isn't the place to do it.

It is of course infuriating when some dickwad prances into the middle of your discussions spouting palpable nonsense, especially if there's some good ol' personal abuse thrown in for good measure. It's the internet equivalent of being out in the pub with a group of friends you've not seen for a while, and just as you get into an interesting chat, the local drunk staggers over, spills his pint in your lap, crushes your bag of crisps and starts telling you how immigrants are wrecking this country. The difference is that in a pub, you can get up and move. In the virtual, you can either enter into debate, at which point all the drunk's mates pole up and join in (and they have HATE tattooed on their knuckles), or you can ignore it and he'll stagger off.

And here endeth the first lesson. Thanks be to Mister Paul for a bally good suggestion. [:D]

How many times have we promised this ladies and gentlemen? The number of times I've logged on after an absence to discover you're at it again has left me despairing at times. We have had The Pledge for a number of years now. I know that some of the board member have signed it every time it has arisen. It is a promise that has sadly not been kept.

Are we going to see follow-through on this one?

They're not allowed over there on ACF because Sam wades in and beats folk over the head with a billyclub the moment they say something that isn't to his liking, and a whole bunch of people who used to frequent C+ -- friends of mine, by the way -- will no longer come here because of the problems we have with trolls. You're telling me we've actually got people provoking that very thing here leaving those of us who have got on the wrong side of the dictator and aren't allowed in ACF for even some temporary respite to deal with them?

Thanks, man. Thanks a freakin' lot [:(!].

    Oh. OK.

    </slightly mollified>

And I'm sorry* that I've completely lost my sense of humour over this, but given that at one time C+ had a lot more of my friends on it than it currently does, and I don't get to talk to them the way I used to any more because of the way ACF works, I'm sure you'll appreciate it's a bit difficult to see the funny side of the troll phenomenon at times.

    * Well, not really sorry, but it's a cause for a certain amount of regret.

CG's quite right. The best thing to do would be to set up a website like cyclehelmets.org specifically for refuting the risible stuff purloined by the Nameless Ones like so much cake. That way we could just point the trolls in the right direction and tell them to go discuss it over there. If you really wanted to keep yourself occupied 24/7 you could make it a wiki.

  • I left C+ forum, and stopped buying the magazine, for a while because in the bad old days there was no suppression of the pro-motorist trolls who posted on this cyclists' forum purely to antagonise its legitimate members.

Since returning, I had not been aware of a troll problem; they seem now to restrict themselves to the Campaign sub-forum, which I seldom look at. However, that is not a reason to tolerate them here. Too many of us have had friends killed by the kind of bastards who spout anti-cyclist/pro-motorist propaganda.

If I am to continue buying the magazine, I expect that the moderators of this forum will immediately bar any contributors of that type.

I don't buy the magazine very often, because I find it mostly quite dull - all speed and bling and the same month after month..

And mostly I ignore the trolls these days for the same reason, because I find the stuff they spout is so boring and predictable - and I have to say, as is the stuff posted by way of rebuttal - it's just having the same row over and over. And I'm hopeless at spotting multiple personalities, (except bonj, can spot him a mile off and I don't think he qualifies as a troll does he, just an ignoramus?). So I just don't bother with threads after a while, and go and play with someone who's got a photo of a baby elephant...

If I had a baby elephant, it could help me clean the car. If I had a car.

Oh dear, by your own standards you just failed. Both in this thread and in Soapbox.

But wait, in soapbox you said I'm not a troll, that I'm just a naughty boy. I think perhaps you should edit this thread to include that caveat.

  • The sad fact is that the core Cycling Plus trolls only come onto this forum to criticise Safe Speed. They are mostly not at all interested in cycling, instead being drawn here for spurious reasons. They prefer to do their sniping at Safe Speed and Paul Smith from the relative safety of this forum, as they know that when their arguments are shown to be simplistic claptrap, they can get the nasty truth-spouting poster gagged.

Occasionally a poster will venture onto the Safe Speed forum, always with the same predictable results: their arguments are trounced, they start to descend into ad hominem attacks, and usually they choose to leave. In some cases they insult legitimate posters so frequently that they get banned as a last resort. They know they cannot find holes in any of the main Safe Speed arguments, so instead they constantly mention web pages and usenet posts that are 6 years old. They ask loaded, irrelevant and puerile questions, and even when they have had answers to the questions, they keep asking them. They misquote, twist people's words and attempt to provoke them. Anything to distract from the fact that THEY ARE WRONG, THEY KNOW THEY ARE WRONG AND THEY HAVE BLOOD ON THEIR HANDS. It's a fucking disgrace.
