Its not confined to the UK. Here in SA, Oz, a few weeks ago, my colleague was cycling home from work as part of his daily commute - a 50 mile single trip [:0] and he says that as a car passed him, a full 2 litre plastic coke bottle was thrown at (and hit) him!!! He was too startled to take their car info. These people are cretins!!

I guess I've been lucky, apart from being subjected to crap driving, the worst that has happened to me is a few obscenities.

    This is my bike:

They will only take any notice if you have evidence. Get a helmet cam then any reportable behaviour can be, well, reported[:0]

It's eaither common assualt (if it makes contact with you) or 'placing an object on or about a carriageway with intent to endager another road user' or 'causing danger o another road user'.

It's worth rporting, but whether much will get one is another matter. Still, you could get lucky as if one of the vehicles already has a setion 59 notice then it can be seized. Hurrah!

I'd definately report it too. I had washing up liquid squirted at me and was a bit sticky for a few miles - no real harm done but that's not the point is it?

My mate had dye thrown at himm cycling to work, ruined his Gill top. Happily he is a Police officer and he rang it in. When he arrived at the station the culprits were there waiting for him and were charged. Happy days.

  • I had what smelled like BBQ sauce thrown all over me. If I had got the number I would have reported it but as I hadn't I didn't.

A while back I was sprayed with windscreen wash; it had been angled out deliberately "for a joke". Another cyclist didn't think it was funny and set about kicking out the tail-lights of the offending vehicle.
None of this stuff helps anyone, very much.

I had water squirted at me in the face from a car in the late 80's at Epping and in the late 90's I had tomato sauce squirted at my face at Mile End which made me ill as I was suffering bronchial problems at the time.My workmates found it comical as I had it all in my hair when I arrived at Waterloo.

Again at Mile End en-route to home I had two young boys throwing water bombs from a jeep like vehicle which if they had hit me could have been very nasty. The woman driving freaked out as I went absolutely ballistic.[:(!]

I had something similar, but the wipers were switched on to flick the water at me. It wasn't raining - they just switched on the washer-wipers as they overtook me!

    Definitely worth reporting.

I did so once, gave the police the reg. no. and they were waiting at the driver's home when he arrived. He was required to report to the police station (I suspect because he was going to go out for the evening) and cautioned.

It helped that he was already known to the police.

from the laughing I'd assume it was deliberate

Had a beer can thrown at me.

And lost count of the number of times I've had a facefull of windscreen wash. Nasty.

I had an egg, that had been thrown from a car, hit me in the throat near the finish of the Fleet Moss AUDAX a few years ago. What a whack it gave me.
At the time I did not know it was an egg, when I put my hand to my throat I could just feel the wetness, so I thought it was blood.
Then my throat swelled up and I couldn't breathe properly and down I went. Other riders helped me the short distance to the finish in Longridge.

We found out another rider was hit on the arm with an egg fom the same car. All we got was the colour and model but no number plate

the organisers called the police but I never heard about anything being done after the day.

Well, I once had, what appeared to be, a recently used condom thrown at me......

    .... it missed.....

..... but still seemed very hilarious to the male and female in the white van it came from.

.....a lot of "what was that all about?" thoughts the rest of the way home!

I've had a lump of ice thrown at me on Upper Street in Islington, some water from a water pistol by Hampstead Heath, and someone's tried to grab my rucksack in Barnet. I clearly look like someone who's asking for it.

Ive had, eggs, beer bottles, spit, and most recently water thrown at me while commuting - the last guy actually stopped in a car park, in Richmond Park, turned round, must have gone to get the water then he catches me up and flings it at me - I mean what have these people got going on in their heads... I tried but could not remember his reg - he was in a big black Land Rover Discovery - no surprise there then !!!

...its the legs that count !

  • Last summer i was cycling home and from a chavved up Nova an opened can of carling black label struck me and skimmed my head ! I was going pretty quick and managed to get up a hill fairly close to my turning, when ahead i noticed there was a queue of traffic on the roundabout and there car was stuck, quite well back.

I went for it ! It was a bloody hot day and i went like a bat out of hell to catch them up. I made it and they had their windows opened. Just before i got to them i got my 1 litre science in sport bottle, which had a sticky science in sport drink mixed with some sticky juice, went passed and got a bloody load of it at them when i went passed !

I assumed the worst and that they would go after me and i mounted the nearby grass and prepared to go off road. However they went past and cheered !

    Bloody chavs.
