Is Good ole Tony Bliar in fact any better then Maggie Thatcher....

With the stench of corruption, the problems wit the NHS, more money "off the books" than any other Government in History, is his legacy any more desirable?

    Inflation under Thatcher = 22%
Interest rates under Thatcher = 15%
Unemployment under Thatcher = 3.6 million

I know who I would rather have in charge - even if I am watched on CCTV everywhere I go.

    But....

How would inflation, national debt et al look if the same figures were used. Accordingto some sources - 5 - 8% of the national debt has been removed from the books to massage the figures.

At least the Tories were honest about these things.

If you set all his politics aside, I still can't for the life of me understand how anybody could have voted for the man himself. He's such an oily, super-smooth creep, full of fake emotion and insincerity. It's always struck me that he would make a good American politician.

Consider the alternative - continuation of John Major (of blue underpants fame) and a sleazy, burned out and divided Tory administration.

Cant see how anyone can loath <s>maggot von hatchet</s> Margeret Thatcher and not loath Tony B.liar... i would say, if anything, the crimes and legacy of Blair are more disturbing...all he did was logically and economically extend the thatcherite regime into ( media, Controlling, targeting) areas it was heading towards anyway

What if Brown is a million times worse than Blair - will we look fondly back on his premiership then?

To have a good victory, you need the right opposition. Remember how burnt out, tired, incompetant and sleazy the Tories looked at the end of their administration?

    People have very short memories.

And most of what Blair has done that people don't like wouldn't have been very different under a Tory administration - CCTV, for example was a product of the Thatcher years and then started its spread under John Major. There's a kind of authoritarianism in social terms combined with economic liberalism that Thatcher pioneered but that Major made more more mundane and even cozy, whilst at the same time being surrounded by self-serving sleazebags. Blair's just carrying on this Great British tradition...

The big problem for mainstream politics now is that Cameron looks like Blair without the substance...

Which is just one reason why fewer and fewer people are interested.

I had the following conversation with a Tory politician.

TP "We're finding it very difficult to devise polices that are different to Labour, because they're doing the sort of things that we want."
Me "Doesn't that mean that you've won the ideas battle if you've convinced them to adopt your policies?"
TP "Possibly, but we still want to get back into power."

I suspect that as a man Brown is better than Blair; it is possible that he actually believes in something i.e. it is possible to have a degree of respect for him. He may turn out to be worse in practical terms as he has shown that he still believes that just irresponsibly throwing money at things will make them better - see the ongoing disaster that is the NHS. He may also have a few socialist instincts left in him, which is usually bad for those who live in the real world. A taste of a Brown premiership may clinch the next election for the tories. OTH he may have enough nouse to disguise his real intentions until after said election.

What a sad inidictment of modern British policies. The honest choices would be to say:

    a. We largely agree with the government and would be happy to work with them for the common good.

    b. Try to work out what they actually do believe in and stand by it.

To simply want to get in office is not the idea. There used to be an old fashioned notion of serving your country.

  • Gordon Brown will turn out to be the best thing that ever happened for the Tories.
He has all the charisma of a slug

I can't begin to imagine him at a G8 summit.

If voting changed anything the government would make it illegal.

Actually the Tories had more votes cast in their favour in the Landslide Election that saw labour into power than Labour had castfor them inthe last election.

Technicaly the tired, incompetent and slazy Tories had a bigger mandate than Labour has at present!

At least the Tories had the decency to resign, or censure the sleaze, unlike New LAbour.

Tony Blair has achieved quite alot of good stuff. Trouble is anything he has achieved will be outweighed by his completely unjustifiable and immoral war against Iraq and the fact that the divide between rich and poor has grown under his leadership.
