I will be fascinated to see how the Scottish contingent explain this one away:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/u ... 909775.ece

Extract:

BRITISH taxpayers are to meet the œ2 billion cost of reintroducing free university education in Scotland - but students from England and Wales will still have to pay the full fees.

    'A fool and his money are soon parted' might have something to do with this. I also imagine the Scottish contingent are more likely to enjoy this than feel a need to explain it ...

    Please correct if this is wrong or inaccurate spiro, but you were voicing concern about declining standards of education in the UK recently?

    Now you are complaining about attempts to improve it?

    Scotland is absolutely ideal according to yer average reactionary tory mindset. It is:

    Average, in terms of GDP per capita;

    Very poor, in terms of life expectancy - the lowest of the 24 smallest countries in a recent survey;

    Above average for education and employment.

    in other word spiro, shush.

    Up here we die off rapidly, costing the poor british taxpayer less in long term subsidy than yer english counterparts who live far too long.

    Rather like shooting stars, we are brighter for a shorter period than most, fading quickly into 'cost free' oblivion, a wise investment surely?

    The only really daft thing about this - the fact that EU students wouldn't have to pay fees and other UK students would - is probably down to Westminster incompetence rather than being the fault of the Scots.

    The second thing is, have they done away with all the pointless Blairite subjects like Meejah Studdees and Hairdressing in a bid to get the current silly number of students down and are just concentrating on real subjects? If so it might be worth the effort. OTH the universities could be just as dumbed down as their English counterparts and the Scots could be laughing at Westminster for footing the bill.

    BTW Redders, if you are intending to die off early, can I have your Rohloff?

    my recollection is that you already have two rohloffs? One per foot is adequate sufficiency.

    Once i become head of the commisariet for rohloff distribution, that figure will be strictly enforced Unkraut. There will be no exception for those already in possession of two. Naturally, someone will need to oversee fair redistribution, a role which i find comes quite naturally with our family biscuit tin.

    Please address the point i.e. how is it fair that the English pay for the Scots to have superior education?

    And Gaz, this is NOT anti-Scotland.

    It IS anti-Scottish politicians whose hypocrisy is driving a wedge between England and Scotland.

    To repeat: I like the Scottish people, I like the countryside, I love the whisky. I have Scottish friends ([;)][:D]). I can't stand Gordon Brown.

    It's a newspaper story, therefore wrong/inaccurate/incomplete/biased/tendentious. It was probably printed on Scottish pine trees, tho'. Talking of which, who gives a toss?

    Well if you are going to have a English government made up of Scottish people, of course they're going to look after their own.[:D]

  • The irony is that improving the life expectancy of the Scots involves taking things off them, namely tobacco, alcohol, drugs and fatty food.

    Yes, one on the recumbent, one on the upright and I've been toying with the idea of a recumbent trike, so if you could manage an offwards shrug vis a vis your mortal coil, it could only be of benefit.

    It's fair because that's how democracy works. We voted for our devolved parliament. It is given a budget to work with from Westminster. We then elect MSPs to control how to spend that budget and they have decided to spend œ2bn of that on funding free higher education.

    Where's the unfairness?

    You may claim unfiarness in the constitutional settlement where Scots MPs vote on English education or on the allocation of the block grant but they're separate issue. How we decide to use our budget is up to us and our elected representatives surely?
