Heh America's great. My dad, a doctor, was asked by immigration if he had any proof of being a doctor, so he showed his passport. "What else?", he showed his uk photo driving license. "What else?" He showed his UN pass which said on it "Dr.". "What else?" He showed his invitation from the State Dept which said on it "Dr.". "What else?" - He replied with "Thats it, thats all I have on me" - The passport control w**kstain said that he wasnt happy with the proof, and detained my dad for a few days.

Yet more reasons not to go to the US, a country which I have enjoyed visiting many times in the past. It really is an extremely backward country.

I vowed never to go back to the US after being arrested and held for 3 days and then charged with something for which there was no evidence because the police needed to arrest somebody on a failed raid.

It works well, they won't let me go back and I don't want to go back.

I often fly through the US en route to Canada as it is frequently cheaper. However, on one of my recent trips, I was asked how long I would be spending in the US. I replied 'As short a time as possible'. Following this comment, I was taken to a room for a 1 hour interview. My conclusion, just bite your lip and go with the flow.

I point-blank refuse to fly through the States anymore.

Chicago is pretty cool, just got back from working there for a week. Easily 50% of the bikes are fixed and brakeless and it has a relaxed yet busy atmosphere.
The US is a big place so it clearly won't be the same all over...

Two sheds... if you (or anyone else) can't you tell the difference between what the blogger describes and anti-Americanism? He's talking about politically-motivated hate from state employees not saying 'all Americans are terrible people.'

On reading what happened, it's fair to say that by comparison, Daniel Cadden got off lightly...

Of course, it'll never happen here... could it?

Well, thank god he didn't try and walk from the airport.....they would have probably shot him dead, no questions asked. I visited the US a countless number of times when setting up a new JV business a few years ago - pre 9/11 - and the more time I spent there, the more it increased my desire to be somewhere else. Their degree of fanatical jingoism and xenophobia scares me.

I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't heard similar things from the States before. One guy I knew from Minnesota said that police cars would often stop and question him while he was cycling around out of town because his behaviour was suspicious, and I've heard exactly the same thing from a Texan.

Clearly theres a lot of variation over there, but stories like this do make me concerned.

Heh heh I once walked along Santa Monica Boulevard for about a mile, from coast going inland. You'd think I was a naked alien walking along whilst sh@gging a goat, from the looks I got from drivers!
And I got detained for 4 hrs at JFK, no explanation given at the end, just a threat of being locked up if I asked again why I was there... however, apart from these, I'm v. positive about Amnerican culture, if not its politics. Any country that gave us Chuck Beery, Slim Gaillard, Jazz, Rock 'n' Roll, Soul and Elvis has to be cool in my book.
[edit for typo....Chuck Beery? Who he?]
