According to tfl, cyclists are three times more likely to be injured by a bendy bus.

Than what? Acorns in the sky? Sharks? Elephants?

I think it would be greatr if bendy buses made a concertina-like noise as they went round corners. [:o)][:)]

I think they should replace the concertina bit with big "Slinky" springs!

    -- Stricktly speaking, it doesn't.

But I do like that idea that the approach of these vehi--cles should be preceded by concertina music or slinky spring sounds ..

With all the usual problems we get with almost every 'risk' story: apparently the accident rate hasn't been normalised for exposure. Bendy buses are used on the busiest routes, so would be expected to encounter more pedestrians and cyclists.

TfL reputedly sent its drivers on a 'Cyclist Awareness Course' after the awful death of Vicki McCreery in May 2004. As a result there was a noticeable drop in poor driving. However the lessons have either worn off or the churn of staff has replaced those who attended as bus driving standards are dropping again.

I was nearly taken out on Tuesday evening by a 207 Bendy whilst riding back from the Hillingdon circuit. It past so close I was unable to pedal for hitting the top of the kerb with the down stroke. Had I been a less experienced cyclist I would have probably been off...

So what happened to double deckers? Bendys take up twice the space. the back end sticks out blocking the road and causes even more jams. Twice the length to try and cycle past. Dooohh...

The main advantages of bendy buses are vastly improved accessibility and boarding times compared with double deckers. There are grounds for concerns about cyclists, and they aren't suitable for all roads because of turning radii etc, but on appropriate routes they can help to provide considerably better public transport.

the courses had been running for a while, and continue. I'm told the LCC provided the course material.

I'm still impressed by bendy bus drivers. I used to catch one that turned left into Portland Place, and on two occasions saw undertaking cyclists hurtle through and surviving only because the bendybus driver had the wit to check his mirrors and to stop in a hurry.

No, with a slinky. Front part slams onto ground, back part slinkies over the top, like a slinky coming down the stairs. Pay attention, these things are important.[:)]

I'll have to see what I can do.[:)] Finding a concertina sound effect might be tricky.. Would snatches of accordian do?

No trams, here no. Which is a shame, because I have a swannee whistle at home...

I have to come clean about the origin of the idea, and all credit to Danny Baker a couple of years ago on his BBC Radio London show....
