What makes you think that? Apart from the fact he was wearing a pink t-shirt?

And a follow up to this:-

Astonishing scenes erupted in Vatican square today when a German man broke free from the crowd as the Popemobile passed him. Security guards quickly wrestled the man to the ground, and beat him into submission with some strong smelling Italian sausages.
Initial reports have suggested that it was Rothbooks body-double making an impromptu protest about the fact they used a 4x4 as the donor vehicle for the Popemobile.
When Herr Rothbook was questioned before being sectioned, it transpired that that he wasn't trying to get to the Pope at all who was oblivious to the commotion behind him, but he was actually trying to wrestle the door mirror off its bracket in protest at Chelsea Tractors in general being used in city centres.
An aggravating factor in the incident which seemed to send Herr Rothbook over the edge, was also that the Popemobile appeared to have passed too close to Herr Rothbooks 'Raleigh Shopper' which was parked against the crowd control barriers and its slipstream caused the sturdy folding cycle to fall over.

It's a bit narrow-minded to think it would be a gay protest, given the number of other "groups" that could have something against the pope. i.e. all "right thinking" people. [;)]

Indeed. It's a radical new movement formed after a successful Putsch in a major Munich hairdressing salon. They call themselves Die Rosahemde (the pinkshirts) and then they march into your house and criticise the curtains.

(With apologies to the Two Ronnies.)

JP2 had more to do with the fall of communism than Thatcher or Reagan.

The new Pope Hossenfeffer or whatever he's called gives me the willies, typical German too, barging in and taking over from a Pole.

He saw the dress, and thought it was a seag show.
Then tried to jump on the bandwagon.

I have my coat and I've rung for a popemobile.
