How high can I get away with,

Front mech on a new (secondhand) build is too high for the chainset really. It's a braze on and at the bottom of the adjustment. How much can I get away with before I grind off the braze-on and fit a band-on mech.?

I would experiment but i don't have a bottom bracket just yet.[:I]

    You're not going to get away with the guide bars (no idea what they're really called) of the front mech being very far above the big chain ring at all. You'll get very sloppy changing - you'll need to overchange quite a long way (if you see what I mean) and then trim back again.

    I'm sure I've seen an adapter for these situations somewhere. If not how about trying a different model derailleur?
