Langster or not Langster...

Hey people, i have a specialized Lanster 2007, to tell you the truth i love it, the compact frame smoothes the bumps i changed soome bits here and there, and it makes a good bike overall.
But that's my modest opinion.
The dilemma is if at some point i should change the frame for something different...or not?
Some say yes some say not...HELP!

good point, maybe because the thought of riding on Columbus steels is appealing?
Let's make it clear, i just wanna know how much i would have to fish out to get a better frame than what i have at the moment

Stef, changing bikes on a regular basis can be a fact of life. Don't beat yourself up about it. If you fancy steel then try steel. Chances are you'll never find the perfect ride but the fun is in trying to.

The good news is that you'll be able to partly fund the project by selling the Langster (the wheels don't have a very good rep but hopefully you've replaced them already). Why not look for something vintage and steel?

I wouldn't bother changing the frame - it's pretty good for an Alu. If you want to go to steel, get a whole new bike!

I too have a Langster 2007 the best thing about is the frame!

Why change it?

Wheels, brakes, levers, seatpost, saddle switch to something better quality certainly but the frame is fine.

the pompino would be a backwards step compared to a langster (imho) longer wheelbase and heavier so the bike wouldn't be as lively, be o.k if you wanted panniers or to fit off-road tyres though.

the thing to do is ask yourself what you DONT like about the langster,
what sort of things would you change?

do you want tighter geometry, a genuine track frame? or something slacker for a gentler ride and to take guards, bottles and panniers?

mondeo is totally average car, i guess. although i don't drive.

every other new fixed in london is a langster. get something more jazzy. more fun. less sheepish. and not a fuji, unless you want to spend a considerable amount replacing every single part.

Like the description of Langsters as 'sheepish', peejay. Is that as in 'propensity to follow' or 'embarrassed through having done something foolish or wrong'? Perhaps it was you who described them in a post I read a while back as the 'Coldplay of fixed'.

Clearly there's a bit of bad brand karma around those ubiquitous brown fixes...

it's just my irrational fear of other people manifesting itself in ever more peculiar, immature ways.

and yes, i think i did label them as the "coldplay" of fixed, although, i think they're more snow patrol than coldplay. maybe with a bit of nathan barley thrown in.

There are a lot of Langsters about. The welding is ugly but most people don't care. The colours are functional black or brown but not very glamorous, cool or fun but they are safe- I can only assume they are marketed at people who like these colours or just don't care. If you like oversized ali tubing, most people again don't care, then they are okay. They have a fixed sprocket but I have only ever see a very small handful of people ride them as a fixed again it would seem most people don't care and prefer the single speed option. They are convenient and everything works out of the box. I would say they are not the choice for someone with an imagination. I think they are for people who are cool!

in that picture it is not unique or jazzy.

currently has new wheelset, bars, tape, seatpost. next up: cranks, BB.

after that: i'll replace the frame. it'll be a bob jackson vigorelli fuji the end of the year. we should go for a ride soon. i'm on half term. not long till endless summer holidays too.

No, it was never a colnago. It was just an early aluminium frame that was too flexible for me. Now i've got a really stiff track frame which is just getting a little chroming done. Should have my bike completely ready by monday. And it wasn't enormous, 56cm!
