Just thought I'd start a new thread for the second season of PTP. Can anyone beat mangaman, our reigning champion?

If you didn't play last year, it's very easy. At the botton of this post is a list of the races included in the competition - before each race look out for a new thread, usually titled "Race Name - Pro Tour Pundit" or something similar.

Simply use your expert cycling knowledge and pick a winner for each race! If it's a single-day race, you only need to pick one rider, but if it's a stage-race, you need to pick someone for the overall classification, but you can earn extra points by predicting the winner of each stage too.

It's that simple, but it's also good fun and adds a bit of interest when your watching the races on telly!

The scoring system:
GC | TdF | Vuelta/Giro | Majors | Minors
----------------------------------------------
 1 | 100 | 85 | 50 | 40
 2 | 75 | 65 | 40 | 30
 3 | 60 | 50 | 35 | 25
 4 | 55 | 45 | 30 | 20
 5 | 50 | 40 | 25 | 15
 6 | 45 | 35 | 20 | 11
 7 | 40 | 30 | 15 | 7
 8 | 35 | 26 | 10 | 5
 9 | 30 | 22 | 5 | 3
10 | 25 | 19 | 2 | 1
11 | 20 | 16 | |
12 | 15 | 13 | |
13 | 12 | 11 | |
14 | 10 | 9 | |
15 | 8 | 7 | |
16 | 6 | 5 | |
17 | 5 | 4 | |
18 | 4 | 3 | |
19 | 3 | 2 | |
20 | 2 | 1 | |

  • Just a quick question

In Stage races how long into an individual stage can we pick a winner. Can we pick a winner during the stage, say if there is a breakaway and it doesn't look like they are going to get caught? Or do you have to pick before the stage has started?
  • I would say you must pick your winner before coverage starts.
  • Yeah, I think we must pick our winner before the start of a stage...

________Our behaviour is a function of our experience.
  • Yes, the pick must be made prior to the start. I don't think there would be too much grumbling if there was a one-off *last minute*, as in just after the off, pick when the poster was genuine but certainly not waiting until a break formed - that's part of the fun, trying to guess who might get into a breakaway or who looks as if they my want to stir it up a bit. You'd be as well no bothering if you made a choice like that - kind of like waiting to see how many horses are left at the last fence at the Grand National before placing your bet or deciding to say at half time in a football match that the team leading 5-0 will win.

    Dear Moderator.

Can you make this thread a sticky - not the Paris-Nice one?

    Thanks in advance, Andy

For some of us these early races are only about finding our legs. We're peaking for the classics and the Grand Tours.

Keith Oates retains the lead. Keith, CLM and myself are the early pace-setters with two 1st place picks in the opening three events. But don't worry if you're a little behind or haven't played yet - it's a long ol' season, and there's no way my form can hold for much longer!

  • I had a beer with the good Keith Oates here in Hong Kong on Friday night and he knows his stuff when it comes to picking bike race winners! Well done Keith!

Freire is gaining fairly major status now..I'd put him at or above any current rider now

I have a similar deep wellspring of talent as Oscar, but applicable to PTP. Unfortunately I am suffering with a early season boil in a sensitive place that is affecting my picks.
