Facing things

So what's it all about?? This facing malarky. I heard you should get the bottom bracket shell faced when you get a new crankset and BB. Is this true? I just read on another thread that the same should be done for brake mounts too. What actually is done when something is faced and is it something I can have a go at?
Cheers[8D]

basically if the face is required to aligne something then yes.
if you are fitting a HT 2 or any other external bearinged bb's then yes both faces should have been faced at some time. when fitting an old skool bb the side (normally drive) that has the flange should be faced. head tubes should be face and reamed to the headset makers requirements. IS brakes i.e. the direct mount ones tend to work better is the clamping faces are perpendicular to the axis of rotation. some brke mounting systems do not require the mounts facing i.e. the avid CPS mounts.
the tools cost a lot. have a read of park tools then have a chat with your LBS.

Thanks Nick, I think I understand it but I don't want to get it wrong and knacker my frame up so I will have a word with my LBS. I will be getting a HT2 crankset and I was looking at some XT brakes too with the PM bracket. What should be looking at paying for this type of service?? Assuming BB and brakes need doing. I already had a headset installed on the frame when I bought it so that's sorted.
Cheers.

Spot on advice above, you might get away with not facing IS brake mounts.0

i would have thought facing and fitting would have been including in the cost of the crankset if bought at your LBS. again in my opinion should be in the cost. if it is needed to get them to work it should be done.
so talk to the LBS and find out what you get for your money.
please note some shops will reduce the cost of the parts and have a seperate fitting (labour) cost.
