Travel on front mech

Please excuse my fettling ignorance but something's bothering me with my front mech (Deore).
I've studiously followed the guide to get the front mech moving correctly but i'm struggling to get full range of travel. The small and intermediate chain rings are fine but when I shift to the large ring the chain rubs the outside face of the mech. It does this when in the smallest (and almost smallest) sprockets on the rear.
I've gone through trying to set the travel but it appears that whatever I do with the screws I cannot get a 0.5mm gap between the chain and the face when on the largest ring. Is the cable between the shifter and mech too lose/tight?
Any advice would be great because i'm short of ideas now!
Cheers,
Daz
I love deadlines, especially the "woosh" they make as they fly by.

slacken the top position screw and add more tension to the cable.
