Its about a 10 minute drive from Grizedale, but i'd recommend Walna Scar, my all time favourite ride and been doing it ever since i started (addicted). Start in torver, and take the forestry route into Seathwaite and then simply up and over walna scar (some superb downhills and a sure hard uphill into Walna scarr which im willing to beat you cant do without stopping and walking). Halfway down walna, take a right turning to head down Scarr head via some disused quarries and into torver.

damn i wish i was there now. Rode it on wednesday...loved every second.

You can add a few fire roads on to your route towards Coniston and follow the path that follows the length of the Lake. This bridleway on the OS map starts near Heald Brow Pature past Low Parkamoor, a great track with nice views.

Also think about going through Satterthwaiteup to Grizedale tarn to Near sawrey then follow a path which goes past moss eccles tarn in to the woods then left in to Hawkeshead.

I recommend the Low Parkamoor track, not technically challengeing, but a joy to ride!!

yeah, if you start the north face trial, about a third of the way round theres a left turning off on one of the fire roads which is sign posted coniston water, and it'll take you precisely there, and thus onto torver.
