I am thinking of getting some new wheels with a budget of œ150. I have been looking at Mavic xc 717's on Deore XT's. Anyone have any experience with this combination or have any other suggestions? Any help appreciated. [:)]

the componants make a great wheel, if built by a decent wheel builder then you can even do some small jumps on them (on a HT) but if you buy them from m:parts then get them correctly tensioned as the spokes come loose very quickly- damaging the rim. i can say al this because i have had a set on my hardtail and they are brilliant.[:D]

I have that combo, built by Merlin. Its a good set for the price but I'd seriously consider going for a Hope ProII at the rear for quicker engagement. You can get a quarter pedal stroke in with no engagement on the XTs.

XTR if you are after centrelock. Absolute bargain.

  • I have those with my Rocky Mountain Element 70 with some IRC Mibro Marathon. I use these wheels to train and they are a perfect fit for XC. If you like to jump I would use something stronger...

I use a Mavic XC717 and XT combo with Panaracer XC Fire Pro's (kevlar) with no probs to date. :D

Seems to be accepted as a good all purpose tyre - quite light too.

I use Schwalbe Nobby Nics on my XTC which are superb, and put on a Racing Ralph on the rear when I want some speed on drier ground.

Shop around and you can get them for £50 or less.Faster rolling, and lighter than the Panaracers.

Have you seen the XT/DT swiss 4.2 wheels on Merlin? £125 and every bit as good as 717s.

These will be the next major upgrade on my XTC.

I got the CRC 717s with shimano hubs a feww weeks ago.

I did a small jump the other day, on landing realized my front tyre was punctured so it must have wacked the rim hard. No sign of any damage, still true. Dam fine wheels.

The Deore and 717 are a good combination.
Mavic recommend 2.1 max tyre width. With trend now to 2.2 & 2.3 for XC and AM it may be worth considering the EN321 which go up to 2.5. Slightly heaver but will mean you are more sure footed should you go for wider tyres.

The label shows max 2.3 on the mavics.

get them built up by merlin, get the xt hubs over deore because they are much better sealed. They'll be fine. as for rubber cinders have been good for me in all round conditions, but are wearing quite quickly.
