105 crank spindle shorter than Ultegra
Like loads of other people I’m changing crank length to 165 mm, this is due to a bad back and not trying to be as fast as the Pog.
Anyway I managed to get an unused Ultegra 165mm chainset to replace my 105 but the new spindle is approx 1mm longer, enough so I can’t take out all of the play. I thought all Shimano crank spindle lengths would be exactly the same, has anyone else had to use spacers for Shimano cranks?

Which series Ultegra crankset is it FC-8100? If you look at the exploaded diagram https://si.shimano.com/en/pdfs/ev/FC-R8100-4862/EV-FC-R8100-4862A.pdf there are two washer/spacers, item 5 Ring R drive side and item 18 Ring L non- drive side. Are these missing?

What BB are you fitting it to ,width of frame etc ? How are you measuring it ?

I can’t find the equivalent diagram for 105 12 speed FC-7100 to compare but yes there are no spacers. Now ordered, thank you!

Those arnt spacers they should be on your new crank ,every crank has them out the box .
This is 1 on a 105 NDS 5800 ,

Well my used 12 speed Ultegra cranks didn’t have these.

They quite often fall off when removing the cranks. Dare say whoever sold you them didn’t notice this either.

Well they should have ,it's part of both sides of the crank .And I've seen the NDS come out once in all the time I've been working on bikes ,to have both " missing " on a relatively new crank would be quite something and possibly would be replaced for free by shimano depending on the age .People don't notice these things because they're just there doing what they do
The above pic is on an ancient 5800 with 10s of thousands of kms on it .

Apologies for the blurred photo (focused on another part of the crank.
both cranks had the rings installed. The above shows the rank arm fixing screw/preload adjuster not quite sitting flush with the crank. The crank pinch bolts tighten ok with the plate in place that prevents the crank slipping off. I’m no mechanic but my other 4 bikes with Shimano cranks don’t look like this but there’s no play in the cranks so I guess it’s ok. Unfortunately my other bikes aren’t 12 speed and I bought the crank 2nd hand.

Have you used the 105 preload nut rather than the Ultegra one? The Ultegra preload nuts are shorter - not entirely sure why - they just are.

11 and 12 speed cranksets should be cross compatible.
