Looking for a London to Oxford Route

Hi

I am looking to cycle to Oxford from (SE) London. I have made a route using the tools at ridewithgps.com but there are still a fair few busy roads involved. This may be unavoidable but I am trying to find a quieter route.

I've searched for other routes on there and found tons but a lot are similarly on pretty busy roads

Has anyone actually cycled London to Oxford and found a reasonably quiet route they could share?

Thanks

Hiya - maybe best to pop a link up to your proposed route, and people can comment on it.

I had a 200k route (I don't live in London) but part of it goes from Marlow to Oxford, it was a couple of years ago I rode it, but I recall it being pretty good.

    Join CTC and ask them?

The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

Cycle.travel is my go-to planner. You can choose any surface or paved, and tweak as you wish - easier on the web version on a big screen than the phone app. Save as gpx or export to device via garmin connect.

orraloon: Thanks. For a road bike

pblakeney: I thought this was a forum sub-topic dedicated in part to routes so assumed that this was a fine place to ask.

Mad_Malx: Thanks. Ridewithgps can also do that and it is really good. I just wondered if anyone actually had a tried and tested route they had already ridden

Sorry if I came across in a bad way. It was merely a practical suggestion as that is why CTC exist.

Ex resident of S Oxon here. Reading onwards. NCN5 takes you through the Chilterns woods etc, pass Ipsden, then head for Ewelme, Chalgrove, Little and Great Haseleys, Great Milton, Wheatley and on. Lots of back roads, mainly rel quiet, Milton to Wheatley can get busy, do wind about a bit but pleasant.

Years ago did a reverse NCN5 then NCN4 (?) from home via Reading to London with a pal. Don't recall much of the easterly section via Windsor etc, but we were on road bikes.

    Thanks all

In case of interest this is the route I have gone for. I looked at some of orraloon's suggestions but going via Reading is a bit far south and would add a bit of distance on. I think this should be ok-ish

You're route from Marlow is what I rode until you speared off right after Chalgrove, I pretty much went straight on, and though the roads were busy, they are very used to bikes around there, so don't recall any issues.

Enjoy your ride - I can recommend the Handlebar cafe if you are looking for somewhere to eat/drink.
