Shimano Brake Bleed Spacers

I have to bleed a R7170 brake caliper and believe I need a the spacer BR-R9270 below:

I cannot find out any details on this spacer and why you cannot use 'the normal' spacer shown below.

  • I have just seen in the Dealer Manual that it is necessary to use the BR-R9270 (page 43) and not the 'normal type'. I guess it is because of the construction of the caliper - so perhaps it is not worth trying to find out specifically why. I think I've answered my own question - thanks.

Stack of business cards and a rubber band has worked for me in the past.

    Sometimes. Maybe. Possibly.

The reason you need a special spacer is because they are designed to have 10% more clearance on the new calipers than the old, so it is very slightly wider. So similar to photonic I just use the old style spacer plus a bit of card to make up the difference. If you aren't using brand new pads you probably won't need to bother making up the difference, just use the old style spacer and after a few pulls of the lever once together it all self adjusts fine.

That spacer typically only comes with the Shimano workshop bleed kit

Use a pair of worn out pads and a screwdriver jammed between them.
