I have 105 5800 on the Giant Defy. The gent at bike shop said 7000 was compatible. however it doesn't appear to be. The top bracket connecting the hanger to the frame is completely different. So
I wondered if I just removed the top bracket on the 7000 and attached the hanger to the original it would work, but it doesnt fit.
Am i missing something here. There must be a solution if you wreck your rear derailleur on a Giant Defy?
I've attached pic of existing system you can see the 5800 is attached via two tiny allen keys behind the axle.

The part attached by the 2 small screws is called the mech hanger, and is part of your frame, not part of the mech. The large silver hex bolt above the word Shimano is what attaches the mech to the frame. 7000 does have an additional link which screws on in the same place. That could be removed for a 'direct mount' frame, but in this case you need to keep it attached.0

Brilliant thanks very much i'll give it a go - seemed confusing with the extra bit but that sounds clear0

When you mount the mech to the hanger, make sure you position the lug in the correct place - behind the hanger.
The lug is next to the mounting bolt.
