It is doable. TikTok isn’t very old and it appears to me to be more prevalent now for youngsters than YouTube.

TikTok is 6 years old. Instagram is 12 years old. Neither are the new kid on the block.

YouTube is 17 years old but not sure it's relevant to replacing Twitter?

There are apps people could use instead but it depends what they actually use Twitter for currently. Unlikely 1 app will come along and do like for like.

It just needs to be a Twitter rip-off, without Musk but with a post edit function.

I really don't get Tiktok. The clips are too sort and the content is just meaningless drivel, not long enough to learn anything. Youtube is way better and there are short if you have a short little span of attention and you need a photo opportunity...

How do people think SpaceX has evolved so quickly and successfully? You try things, trying/evolving isn't penalised (in roles which require this), being *cautious and hesitant is*. Failure isn't looked down on it's expected and long as things get learnt and there is progression/evolution that's what counts (the batting average(:

The thing I don't get about some people on here is they seem agnostic toward this mentality of aspired greatness, but here is the thing they keep banging on about growth "WE NEED GROWTH AS A COUNTRY". What/Who do you think gives you .g.r.o.w.t.h.?

*It's bloody lucky there are people who are cautious in certain job roles, they are just as important. A far less percentage required though in a place akin to SpaceX, especially R&D.

To summarise my off the cuff ramble. Musk tries things and he isn't scared to, that's why he has put people into space!

  • I'm going to build enough rockets to colonise Mars. A ridiculous goal/madness.

Sure, but look at what that Maradona crazy aspiration has led to. Reusable rockets, a big step towards Humanities leap into the universe.

    To boldly go...

The idea of the future of free speech / giving everyone a platform being in the hands of a Chinese company such as TikTok is both ironic and worrying.

I’d be happy for Twitter to die and not be replaced.
  • I've said this before too. When asked "what it's like to be you"? He's responded "sometimes I don't want to be me".

What he does ain't bloody easy, it ain't a life for the faint hearted who fanny about on the internet all day. That's probably why he likes/owns twitter, it's quick and salient.

The advantage of Twitter is its hot-takes and minimally filtered sources (which is also its weakness). In an age where big money controls the major media channels, providing a platform to individual voices has a useful place.

Yes, I'd not want that platform to be in the hands of a company with ties to the Chinese government either.

Tiktok is easily my favourite app.

If you spend enough effort sorting the algo right it's wall-to-wall laughs.

    NO!

It's just short burst of mindless drivel.

Help me out here, sell it to me? What do you learn from it?

If you're learning from Tiktok you're doing it wrong.

If you're doing it right it's wall-to-wall escapism. Lotta jokes, lotta stupid stuff, lotta funny stories.

You could do some kind of homage to Musk on there (although Only Fans is probably the better platform for you to do that).

I get the point. It's just a vacant waste of valuable time to me. It's akin to drugs, a short burst of stimulus then back to reality.

The most liked clip, 59.7 million likes.

    I rest my case, M'lud.

I’m not proposing alternatives. I was providing an example of how an app (TikTok) can grow rapidly despite a dominant market player (YouTube) already existing.

You can’t assume Twitter is safe solely due to its size.

I think there is a small, but real, risk that Musk tanks his investment and gets surpassed by a.n. Other platform.

I am sure plenty of people are trying to achieve just that. Most will fail. One may not.

TikTok and Youtube are not in competition. It's like saying channel 5 launched successfully despite radio 4 already being popular.

Vine was the incumbent which TikTok was competing with and it got annihilated. Funnily enough Vine was owned by Twitter.

Beme was another startup doing a similar thing which got bought and mothballed by (I think) CNN.

People don't use TikTok or YouTube, they have really different use cases.

I’m beginning to feel you’re deliberately missing the point.

Friends reunited and MySpace were surpassed if that makes you feel happier.

Do you not think TikTok and YouTube have any overlap?

Vinted must be taking share from eBay.

My point isn’t that any of these prove Twitter will flop, I see it as an unlikely possibility. The examples are merely to show that platforms can still rise quickly despite the market already being served.
If somebody is simultaneously weakening their own product whilst another is growing, let’s watch and see.

Now yes. YouTube and Instagram (or rather Google and Meta) looked at the success of short format videos on Vine, Snapchat, later TikTok, and thought oh yeah lets copy that, and launched shorts and stories.

But they weren't really big in that space when TikTok launched.

This is interesting (but with the caveat that they are not all competing in the same space) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riOhTYNJ2BY

I'm not a software engineer, but 8000 feels like a huge workforce for what is ultimately quite a simple website.
