Which wheels for around £350-£400 ?
I need a new set of wheels for my BMC Teammachine. Currently running a set of Fulcrum Quattros but theyve seen better days and its time to move on. I dont want to spend too much and a similar set of wheels would suit me fine. I only ride for fitness and not concerned with eeking out every little watt. The roads around here arent great so looking for something strong and 'bombproof'.
So for around £400 which wheels would you get ?
I had my eyes on the following pair but happy to take advice if you think there is something more suited.
[DT Swiss PR 1600 Spline 32 Clincher](https://www.merlincycles.com/dt-swiss-pr-1600-spline-32-clincher-road-wheelset-700c-108395.html)
[Fulcrum Racing 3 C17 Clincher Road](https://www.merlincycles.com/fulcrum-racing-3-c17-clincher-road-wheelset-110358.html)
Im leaning towards the DT Swiss as I keep hearing how good they are. Only thing that's got me considering the Fulcrums is the fact that Ive had 2x sets before (5's and Quattros) and they've been robust enough and Ive not had any issues with them beyond replacing bearings when worn.
I am a heavier rider (95kg and prefer sprinting to climbing).
I will be using the wheels with GP5000 clinchers.
Might be worth noting I have platinum membership at Wiggle and roughly £25 worth of 'points' at Merlin if that helps decide on a set.

Only other set that comes to mind are £355 https://www.probikekit.co.uk/bicycle-wheels/campagnolo-zonda-c17-clincher-wheelset-black/11349819.html (400 at Merlin befor reward point discount).
DT do seem to be popular recently, longivity over marketing specs for the price.================

Hunts? These seem decent value : 28/32 front rear spoking, 130kg rider weight limit, 3 year warranty.

this. 100%.oxoman said:Any of the above except hunts. I believe you could get some Malcolm handbuilts aka cyclininics births from tweek cycles. Cannot fault them myself, currently have 2 sets. Wouldn't have hunts again after being given some and having a few issues. Your money at the end of. the day.

Having had trouble with the stock wheels on a Boardman bike and similar with Fulcrum Racing 5s (freehub and bearing wear) I changed to a pair of Borg22s from the Cycle Clinic. Thus far they have been superb - I've ridden them since August without issue and it's been pretty wet during that time. Service yesterday shows no issues with the bearing or freehub as yet (the Fulcrums were getting through a freehub and bearings every 3 months!). If you get them with the DX hub it might be a little above this budget (about £450 I think) but the extra investment would be worth it in my opinion. Just hope I haven't jinxed it now!0

Interesting experiences with the Fulcrums. I’ve just replaced the bearing in my Racing 5s at 13000 miles. I swapped the freehub from Campag to Shimano at 11000 miles and the old Campag freehub was fine. On my Quattros (which I don’t like, so I gave them to my son!), the bearings were getting rough at 3000 miles so I replaced them but the Campag freehub was still OK0

I'm rolling around on the DT Swiss 1600 Spline (mine are the slightly shallower 23mm version), tubeless setup with gp5000TL. I've found them to be very good wheels, if you got yourself a set I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed.0

Campagnolo Zondas are an excellent choice in that price range.0

As much as I've kinda loved my Scirocco wheels the bearings never lasted long at all. Always replacing them, especially in the freehub. Same goes for the Zonda. Also, both rear rims ended up cracking in the end. The Zonda way before worn out around the spoke holes. The Scirocco cracked on the brake track but it was fairly worn tbh.cq20 said:Interesting experiences with the Fulcrums. I’ve just replaced the bearing in my Racing 5s at 13000 miles. I've had a set of DT Swiss ER-1600 23mm over the winter and been very happy with them.
The ER are 2mm wider than the PR.0
