New forum functionality

Hi BikeRadar forum members,

The great thing about our new forum is its flexibility and the speed at which we can make changes. Since migrating to the new platform we’ve now added the following functionality:

Reactions

You may have noticed that you can now react to posts from other users.
We’ve enabled the option to ‘Like’ and ‘Dislike’ posts.

Like

A like is a general approval of a post.
If you like a post it’ll add 1 to a post’s individual score. Enough up votes could mean that a post or topic ends up in a (currently forthcoming) curated area of the site.

Dislike

A dislike is a general disapproval of a post. Should a post receive five dislikes then it will automatically be ‘buried’ meaning it will require a user to click on the content directly to reveal it.

Badges

Your user profile will now present badges that are associated with your use of the forum. Badges will be awarded based on loyalty to the forum as well as making use of certain functionality.

To view your badges, click on you’re the cog at the panel on the top right of the website and then ‘View Profile’

Marking posts as read

To clear all posts marked as ‘new’ posts on the forum then you can now use the functionality below.

To mark all posts as read

The 'Mark all viewed' button that is now accessible via the cog at the top right of your screen.

To mark all posts within a certain category as read

Access the desired category and then click on 'Mark Category Viewed' which is accessible via the cog at the top right of the screen.

We understand that this migration has brought substantial change, and although we cannot please everyone, rest assured that we are always listening. Please keep the feedback coming.

Where are the like and dislike options? I can't see them anywhere...

They should be tucked beneath a post, below a user's signature (if they have one)

  • Thanks for flagging @cruff — I'll look into that right away
  • If you refresh now @cruff — are you now seeing the buttons?

I don't have a cog top right on home page to mark all as read.

  • @david7m at the moment this add on is not compatible with our mobile version of the forum. Frustrating I know, we're trying to find a fix. Thanks for reporting.

Does the little facebook share icon now mean that FB can track all that goes on in this forum? Can't remember if this was a "feature" on the old one.

No. Those share buttons are now deactivated too.

  • Is there a way to see certain segments of a forum category first?

For example when I want to go to Pro Race in Road Cycling there are more clicks and a fair bit of scrolling.

The various FAQ sub forum appear to have now been thrown open to all posters so a number of posts that should be in the core forum are going into FAQ, can we get them locked again.

The cog symbol by each post open a drop down with only one button (edit) so can we replace the cog with an edit to save the extra pointless click and scroll?

What's with the threads being closed ? Who can do that ? The thread starter ?

Can someone please approve my post to the Health and Fitness forum. I have raised this issue on the bugs thread.

I have just posted to the Road/Fitness & Health forum. After posting I noticed a typo so I Edited and re-posted. Then I thought of something else to add and again Edited.

Now the post has been withheld pending approval and is not visible.

Seriously? Come on guys do you really need to have the power of a superior being just to administer a forum?

I just logged in to this new forum software and its look and feel reminds me of those forums back in the 90's.

What functionality are we talking about here? Extremely basic stuff I think.

  • Tried to stick with this, but seriously testing my patience, takes an age to get to anything you want to look at, I'm on a lot of forums and this is by far the worst.
  • Sorry to say that the new site is awful. Illogical, unclear and difficult to navigate. The old site was so much better.

    Revival of old threads
Other forums automatically lock threads that are past it - so you can't just comment on threads that haven't been active in over a year ...
Can we get that functionality on here as we keep getting old threads revived and it's not obvious..

Good point, I'll have a dig around for a solution to this.

I can't honestly believe that this forum is meant to look as it does in the screen shots below. Really?

Can I suggest the swear filter gets adjusted? Couple of options in order of preference:

    1. Just remove it (apart from a couple of really bad swears if you really want)
    2. Change it to a single word rather than "20p for the swearbox" - it makes a lot of sentences really jarring to read

Absolutely, I'll change this right away.

Any news on the egosearch function?

On the plus side, without half the functions of the old site my forum usage has dropped to about 20% of what it was, so I have been much more productive.

I am sure that's what they were after :)

Can we go back to the old style? This is truely awful and horrendous to navigate around. I've gone from visiting almost daily to not wanting to log in at all.

as above very rarely visit these days as a very poor user experience (the ego's on cakestop don't help as well ;) , suspect it will eventually trail off all together

I've enabled an advanced search function which will now allow you to egosearch and in general be much more specific.

See the screenshot below which gives an example of how it can be used.

And where can I find this? The screenshot doesn't expand when you click it, and I can't figure out how to access the advanced search, much less save the results
