Pins and Needles in Ankles

I have recently only started road cycling and at the moment got straps on my pedals, which I use, along with some normal trainers. I completed my longest ride today of 60 km, however half way through, I noticed I started to get pins and needles in my right ankle. This started to climb up my leg slowly and no matter how much I adjusted my foot in the straps it would still hurt.
After eating a little bit while riding, it improved however I noticed a big difference when I removed my foot from the strap and rested it on the arch of my foot rather than the ball.

Has anyone experienced this and if so what is the way to prevent it? Is it better to get clipless shoes or stick with flats for now?
