Looking for a reliable fast £550 wheelset

Hi all. I’ve just come into my second ever road cycling season and have £550 to upgrade from my stock Mavic cxp elite wheels to something better. I don’t often have this sort of money to blow so they need to last at least a couple of seasons and will be used for quite a lot of flat solo rides and short time trials.
I want something that will be faster than my current wheels.
I have done so much research but practically everything has good and bad reviews! At the mo I’m thinking Ican, Prime or Kinetic One. Any ideas peeps?!

At that price you can look at hunt wheels, maybe some Chinese carbon if you are looking for something deep.
Shimano has wheels across a whole range of prices and you can never go wrong with shimano.
  • Try Zuus.

If you want deep carbon clinchers from a UK shop with warranty and you can't bend on the £550 budget, you might need to be patient.
Hunts are way over budget and don't get discounted much so I'd rule them out unless you're happy with alloy.
Prime often are in budget due to discounts, but they are currently not unless you want discs. If you do go for Prime - worth going for CRC if you have BC for the 10% discount. Though on the other hand buying from Wiggle will automatically put you at Platinum discount for a year, which has to be worth something.
Selcof often are in budget (at Planet X). You can get the 40mm today at £550, but Planet X prices yo yo a lot, the 56mm have been down at £500 before. Just be patient as the prices will go down at some point, and reconcile yourself to the fact that at whatever price you buy them at, the next month they will probably discounted to be £100 less!
The Kinetic ones you linked were Alloy/carbon, which tend to be heavy. Would take the RRP with a pinch of salt but the £650 current price looks OK. Don't believe the hype about alloy braking being much better than carbon. In the dry, the braking on my carbon wheels is excellent.
The Ican wheels you linked to look to be Chinese ebay specials. From the same company as I got mine from, which I have found to be very good indeed. But you'd probably struggle to get a warranty repair if that matters to you.
There are a multitude of other Chinese carbon on ebay at way under budget, but there is some element of luck involved as to if you get hit by customs and if they are built well, and again, warranty claims are a pain in the backside.

I just picked up a new set of Prime RP38 rim brake for under £500.

Might be an option. The usual Chinese fare but at least you've got a warranty and UK contact if that matters to you.

    Or try spokesman wheels.

    His eBay account is

    https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/foxenhole/m. ... pg=&_from=

But cheaper to buy direct from his website.

  • Thank you all for your replies. I’ve checked out all of the wheels you suggested and after much deliberation took the Chinese plunge with these :

I know Chinese is risky but these are deep rimmed, still relatively light, with Cx Ray spokes and a novatec hub, so with some good Ican reviews around and these points I felt like it was worth the punt! Just got to wait 6 months for delivery now ha ha

Seriously?? What's the point? Summer will be over (assuming you're in the uk).

Why not just get a set which will be delivered now??

To be fair I think it's another one of those "I'll ask the question even though I've made my mind up anyway" type of threads.

  • Im not Chinese, I don’t work for Ican, I hadn’t made up my mind before posting and I was only joking about the six month delivery time. Thanks to everyone that gave sensible replies initially, shame people had to step in and start nit picking - as a first poster this hasn’t reflected very well on the forum.

Apologies, do let us know how the wheels perform when they arrive.

Yeah, it's called 'managing expectations' in my line of work.

Wondering how you managed with these wheels? Looking at picking up a set and noticed the icans were priced very competitively on amazon.

OK enough with these conspiracy theories. It's a bit boring for the rest of us.
