Not a classic year.

Saw my man retire.

Decent MSR finish.
Decent Flanders with some good jeopardy.
PR; not a classic race.
Amstel: quite fun but you knew Phil was on if, even with a punctured kidney.
LBL duuuull
Giro: weak start, strong finish. Enjoyed the route from a tourist perspective.
Tour: meh. Tour is the Tour
Vuelta: didn’t watch it but looked fun.

Saw this; most impressive power output for a single stage for 2017:

In which they will devote more time to Dwars door Vlaanderen than the Tour de France.

    Froome's double then getting busted
The passing of under appreciated Roger Walkowiak, winnder of the 1956 Tour de France (it didn't even get a mention on Bikeradar)

Good year for the Dutch though.

In part two, being very Belgian orientated, they discussed Gilbert's win in Amstel.

I'd forgotten quite how serious it was. He crashed heavily on his back. Apparently he actually couldn't move for the pain for about half a minute, before being put on his bike. He says it was OK in the saddle but agony while out; though he spent a lot of time out the saddle in the finale.

He said it helped that he was basically flat out from the moment he ceased to the finish, meaning his body didn't really have time to acknowledge the injury.

He was really hurting at the finish, and within 3 hours of winning, attacking at 50kph etc, he was bed ridden with a perforated kidney and was told absolutely not to move from his bed for 2 weeks!!

    Hard. As. Nails.

I thought it was a pretty damn fine year of racing on balance. all 3 gts were watchable/interesting. the Froome positive a bit of a downer...should have voluntarily suspended himself IMO straight away but 20/20 hindsight etc.. shame to see Boonen go.
