  • Not looked at current deals but have used Glisshop in the past and they were very good even though they are located in France.

Tentatively Trysil in Norway in mid-Feb, so that there is at least some daylight. For us ski-in-ski-out and fewer crowds is more of a draw than the number of man-points on offer up the mountain.

  • Been saving up flat out since skiing Davos-Klosters this January, which emptied the bank balance but by God was it worth it!
Off to Saalbach on the 6th. of January for a week with my better half. Looking forward to see what it looks like with snow. The last time I was there was on a Giant Reign!
  • 6 degrees in Vaujany village today, 2 on top. Mild for 2 days. Then -14 and a metre of snow in 5 days or so. Off on the 14th. Quite excited now.

Absolutely banging it down with the white stuff in the Alps over the past couple of days, and more forecast over the next week.
  • Chaos out there today. Honestly, you'd think the French would cope better with a mere 1.5m of overnight snowfall. Amateurs.... :D

I got the coach back from Alp d"huez one afternoon a few years ago. It had been snowing heavily all morning. All the snow clearing teams had disappeared for a french lunch hour. When they came back there was chaos. The police told everyone going uphill that they had to put their snow chains on. There was mile after mile of cars with Dad holding first time out of the box snow chains being instructed by wife reading snow chain instructions. The few who had successfully fitted their snow chains were stuck behind the vast majority who had failed dismally.
Any idea that the french know how to deal with these conditions is boll0cks.
  • Paid the balance of our chalet yesterday. Got the boy to try his sallopets on last night, he really needs to stop growing!

The trick to getting snow chains on easily is not to do it at night, in the snow, on a slope when it's -15 degrees. I always have a refresher on the drive before we set off for the journey.

    Enjoy !!!!!
  • We pre ordered our lift passes a week ago and they arrived in the post yesterday, an odd way of doing it which we've not done before but the more I get sorted here the less to do over there which = more skiing!

Also picked up a pair of Tecnica ski boots for the boy off ebay, not far away so he could try them on, £20.

I'd really like it if some European resorts adopted the N American style of avalanche control and safety in bounds. Plus stopped the grooming nonsense.
  • Good week had. Chalet and food was superb. Vaujany excellent for kids, limiting for adults. So you need to pop over to ADH but be back for kids lessons end at 11.30. Not doable so dad one day, mum the next etc. Getting to ADH in bad weather means lots of cable cars. Getting back same unless the top lifts open then you do a red. No easy way of getting kids to ADH to experience it. So, on balance, no to Vaujany next time.

Loads of snow days, only really 2 sunny days. Conditions for skiing excellent though, if not too much snow.

Finally, got back to airport, flight canned to Cardiff. Overnight in swanky Mercure, 5 hour wait at airport next day. Flight to Southampton, bus to Cardiff. 30 hours extra including loads of waiting and travelling. And a rickety Bombardier Q400.

But all in all, a success. Just avoid Chambery, as the internet says.

Got back earlier today. We stayed in a great hotel in Zell am See, would def stay there again. Two days skiing in Zell, three days on the Kaprun glacier, and one day across in Saalbach & Hinterglem. The conditions were spectacular, powder for days 1 and 2 then stonkingly great pistes every day after that.

I’ve not been to Austria before for a ski trip but would def go again.
