As the title says - and as Christmas is approaching and it's likely to be a common topic - recommendations for a boy's 24" inch road bike please - happy for it come with either drops of flats.

Hi,
This market seems to be changing from year to year. I got my younger son a Moda Minor which has been well thought out. It is no longer available via Wiggle, nor my Google search, so may not be available.
There is an article here that may help, listing several options -

Some (eg Isla Bikes Luath 24) will be over budget, new. Others eg Hoy and Wiggins will be easy to find and preview and be within budget.
One other option is to look at the second hand market - many of these bikes are very lightly used before the rider grows out of them. Isla bikes hold their value well (good news for sellers, not so great for buyers) and are readily available on the usual sites (this forum, ebay etc).

The wheels are a bit bigger, but Decathlon's Triban 300 comes with 650C wheels and offer a lot for little money. They are less well set up than the specialist kid's bikes, I think one of the problems is that they use standard crank lengths.0

My middle boy rides a 24" Hoy (Cammo). £400 now, but probably discounted for Xmas. Microshift, which are a bit agricultural, but work well enough (not that he shifts all that much; sur la plaque is his motto). I rate it pretty highly. Flat bar version is currently £360. Frog/Islabike are bit spendier, but may find one used.0

Brilliant stuff - thank you very much.
Have just been to see a Raleigh racer job and a Frog 70 but as I was my way home it was only a visual rather than the normal bike buying criteria of pulling the brakes on and picking it up before making sucking noises through teeth.
Isla bikes out of budget although I appreciate why people buy them.
Will now spend some time looking at the above options.

Agree 100% - this is actually a big factor I'm looking for when buying.
I'm even thinking of getting one with drop bars, removing the bars and brifters and fitting flat bars and triggers until he gets used to the new bike and geometry, then refitting the drops etc.

My 7 year old has a Wiggins Chartres 24. It’s a great bike, set-up well from Halfords which was a pleasant surprise!
My lad zips along on tarmac and has no problems with hills due to the sensible gearing, plus change the tyres and it can be easily used for gentle off road rides too.
Highly recommended.
