Numb Finger

Firstly I wasn't sure where to put this i guess it's health related.
I have been doing some road miles recently on my MTB and I have been having an issue with what I can only describe as pins and needles in my left index finger followed by it feeling numb for days. It generally happens when I go on a longish ride I rode for about 3 hours yesterday and today the tip of my finger is very numb.
Anybody else encountered such a thing? Anyone have any ideas what could cause this?
It's pretty annoying and makes me not want to ride.
