What is a "roadie" ? ** POLL **

OK this one has me stumped so I've created a poll. I've always thought that a "roadie" refers to a person who rides a road bike. I posted this on another forum and was told I was wrong. Others argued that a roadie is an alternative word for a road bike. So, which is it?

e.g.

- Bob has given up riding his mountain bike, he's a roadie these days, or
- I have just bought a new roadie.

I've googled the phrase and can't find a definition anywhere; there does seem to be many more examples of the former definition though.

Comments

  • 'Roadie' most definitely refers to the person and not the bike. Often used by those on 'the dark side' (MTB 'ers)

    In other team sports analogies, I'd say the following:

    Roadie = hockey player
    MTB''er = rugby player
    Commuter = footballer

    Those that are familiar with all three sports (esp hockey) might like to comment.

    Lame term in both instances, but who calls their bike that?

    Sets up gigs.
    The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
    I am not sure. You have no chance.

    Yep, that's the only time I'd use the word.

    You used to hear the term more 10-15 years back but pretty much everyone is a roadie now.

    As a hockey player I think that's pretty fair.

    , I'd say the following:

    Roadie = hockey player - continually bent over, lower back issues
    MTB''er = rugby player - missing ears and other body parts
    Commuter = footballer - continually raises their hand calling for unjust play from every one else on the pitch, "waaah he cut me up, waaaah that person stepped out infront of me ... Ref, Ref, he is being naughty

    yeah sounds about right

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but the correct term for someone who cycles on the road is "cyclist".
    The correct term for a bicycle used on the road is "bike".
    Surely that's all there is to it? ;-)

    I think the term is dependant on the person viewing the cyclist ..... ie if you are a car driver then the correct term is "gah fecking tw4t fecker get out the fecking way nobcheese" ..... where as if you are a pedestrian the correct term would be is "gah fecking tw4t fecker where the feck did you come from nobcheese" .... or if you are a spouse - "gah fecking tw4t fecker stop wearing that fecking lycra its embarrassing me, nobcheese"

    You do realise that it is Knobcheese and not nobcheese.

    A roadie is the bloke in a black tee shirt who carries my speakers. Usually with an unlit fag hanging out of his mouth and a (dope-induced) vacant look.
