Great to see Van Emden so happy with the win :D
It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.

Great end to a good few weeks of racing. Dumoulin thorougly deserved that, rode well throughout.

As always in this mad sport, the question for him now is- what next? My guess is a super TT heavy TDF 2018 route, with Froome aiming for a 5th win against the young superstar Tom Dumoulin...

    WTF with NQs pink trainers?

They found some podium women tall enough to kiss him.

They would have had to seriously duck if Quintana had won.

Maybe they should've sorted him a pink skinsuit rather than the trainers.

Nibs was the most likely challenger over the 3 weeks but he needed a minute.

    Was it there somewhere?

Yesterday, pretty much everyone could have taken another minute on Dumoulin with half-sensible tactics. Nibali couldn’t have done much more on his own, however.

Quintana should have found a minute in those mountains - but sitting in the wheels which seems to be his modus operandi these days wont get him the win. We know he can climb but he chooses(?) not to go on the attack. Froome must have learned a great deal this Giro.

I think the stage to Piancavallo was a missed opportunity for Quintana and Nibali... they let Pinot go and didn't attack Dumoulin.

I would also argue that early on in the race they didn't do much going up Mount Etna... another missed opportunity.

    Outstanding fortnight of racing.

Finally, we've being treated to a TTer vs climber race.

Said not so long ago Dutch cycling was properly in the doldrums.

Now 2 stage wins and the Giro.

At 37 Tom did an excellent job. Brilliant job. Would be interesting to see a Domoulin vs Froome. Froome seems to be on less than best form. Could be an interesting show-down.

Looking back Nibs lost it when he had his off day on the climb to Blockhaus. For the rest of the Giro he was on a par with Quintana in the mountains.

Dumoulin definitely the strongest over the three weeks though. Presumably he'll be going for the Vuelta now?

Hard to compare. Froome is a far better climber than TD, and not a bad tester. But the Sky team is a lot stronger than Sunweb.

Very true, however, he managed to win without a team here. Saying that Sky are not likely to make as much of a pigs ear of it as Movistar did at the Giro.

They mentioned this on commentary a few times. Can't remember a drop.

Often with the Tour the course doesn't give the opportunity for a climber to do anything before the final climb, mainly due to long valley sections. However, this Giro wasn't like that. For whatever reason Movistar just seem to be too defensive. When Quintana does attack he is quickly looking round and slowing down, rather than just carrying on full gas and trying to crack his opponents. Either he wasn't feeling great in the mountians, or he doesn't have that ability to know when his opponents are at their limit.

That was the first GT I have watched right through with my son. We both loved it, and it was pretty cool watching and shouting at the TV together.

I just had to explain to him that GT endings aren't usually that tense, and that TT's are almost never that entertaining.

    Great stuff.

Amador 10th in today's TT at 1'02". Impressive performance after an entire GT up the road as a largely unused springboard. Might feel like he's going to waste...

He was fourth on GC two years ago, so if he feels that he will have done so for a while.

I'm thinking Quintana wasn't that bothered about winning the Giro and was only there as a training excercise for the TDF. He never pushed himself and never committed to any of the attacks he or others started. Maybe he's trying to lure Froome a false sense of how fit he really is. My guess is that he will be on top form for the TDF and will fight right to the end to try and win... Watch this space...
