Hard to comprehend that there are no recently retired pro's that couldn't have done the gig, or wanted to.

I assume he'll be the generic 'everyman' anchor?

Edwards is more qualified for the role though. He's been working in television for 13 years. I find him a bit bland but he's certainly a competent experienced professional. I can't remember Gary Imlach riding many races either. And Mel and Sue have never worked as bakers.
He's also Eurosport's lead presenter across a range of sports.

Does seem a strange choice. I could understand him maybe on ITV/BBC coverage as he is a well known 'face' and likely to appeal to the casual viewer. I wouldn't have thought that most people watching cycling on Eurosport fall into the casual viewer category though.
Apparently he's also anchoring the Eurosport TDF coverage.

I think he's a cyclist - he was presenting the New Years Run from Edinburgh clad in Rapha.

Assume he's presenting on some cycling TV race show or other? He's been presenting triathlon for years and always dressed head-to-toe in Rapha gear.

He's not even the first ex-triple jumper to be covering cycling for a UK TV station

He's done BBC coverage of the Olympic Road Race and Surrey Classic (plus track from memory) so it's hardly new. Many sports are presented by people selected for their presenting ability rather than sporting background, no-one would bat an eyelid at Clare Balding or Jill Douglas presenting. That said, I don't rate Edwards as a presenter.

True, but Eurosport is a dedicated sports channel. I would think most viewers would already have more than a passing (or none at all) knowledge that BBC presenters are chosen for.
Eurosport could have chosen someone with slightly more specialised knowledge (eg. someone who doesn't ask stupid questions of their co-pundits) - though, then again Eurosport are the home of CK - so maybe not :?

Carlton Kirby's must have been on Police Academy.

But Eurosport presumably would like to broaden their audience, and bring in new viewers. And therefore they need an everyman presenter to ask those questions on their behalf. Most sports on TV are presented by a presenter rather than an ex-pro. The likes of Gary Lineker on MOTD are unusual

This might have more to do with the Olympics - Eurosport have the rights to the next two and will need a good recognisable athletics anchor - JE - prob paying him a fair sum so are now using him across their other sports to get some value for money and/or perhaps getting him ready for working with their teams and directors etc?

could be worse, they could have got Helen Skelton from the BBC to present. She is an absolute master at asking stupid questions!

As a live TV presenter she appears to still be in Blue Peter mode. She's better suited to doing the 'action woman' roles.

That made me laugh out loud.

I don't rate Ashley House, but him and Juan Antonio Flecha eventually did get better as co-presenters.
    Greg Lemond - yawn

I didn't mind House. It was Flecha who did my head in. He'd just say the obvious, always.

It was quite painful and sad watching LeMond - I know he's had a lot of health and other issues to deal with, and clearly was a great rider, but he was completely unsuited to a TV role - he really struggled to hold a coherent conversation.

On L'equipe they have Steven Roche as a third commentator, which is a pretty odd accent to listen to.

Roche is perfectly comprehensible in English, its just when he speaks French that it gets a bit interesting.

She did quite a bit at the Olympics. I'm surprised you missed the outrage that was in the click bait at the bottom of these pages for months as she flaunted her legs in a ridiculously short skirt and touched up Mark Foster on live TV (well, that was the click bait headline for her wearing clothing appropriate to the temperature and lightly resting her hand on his leg).

Unfortunately she does ask very basic questions but then many people watch the Olympics that otherwise don't watch sport I guess.

Thought he was good this morning. He was certainly good throughout the skiing worlds earlier this year - obvious that he'd done a tremendous amount of research.

He doesn't need to be an expert in cycling, he needs to give others the opportunity to give interesting answers which I think he does well.
