My freehub is making a strange noise when free wheeling.
In addition to the muted clicking there is an occasional rasping noise.
I haven't managed to determine exactly when it occurs.

I took the freehub off and it has some odd marking and damage as shown here

I cannot detect any movement of the freehub when its on the wheel and the bearing seems to be ok.

Any ideas please?

Check the inner bearing, the markings clearly indicate excessive play.....

There is one bearing on the freehub - are you referring to that?
It "seemed" to be ok but I suppose it could be shot.

I do think you are right though and the marks show the freehub hitting the splines.

Do I try and replace the bearing or a complete freehub?

This kind of freehubs has (almost) always 2 (cartridge) bearings, which can be replaced if necessary...
Stick a finger in the inner side and try to rotate the bearing, if it has play you know the problem....
Normally the outer one fails first.

The bearings are marked with JBL 25 and SISOIRS C3 (I think) - what are they?

Malcolm at Cycleclinic offers replacement bearings for Miche Primato hubs

    https://thecycleclinic.co.uk/products/m ... ngs-6001c3

I think these are the ones you need but if in doubt give him a call to confirm. He is a regular contributor to the BR forums

EDIT - apologies - these are the bearings for the wheel hub AFAIK not the freehub. Call Malcolm anyway - he builds a lot of Primato hubbed wheels so may be able to guide you
