Totally get where the OP is coming from. Decided this year I wanted to try a TT, been dlocal course on Bkool and to be honest am finding any excuse I can not to do a proper one once they start! Ive no doubt they wouldnt care if it took me 50 mins to do a 10 but I dont want to embarrass myself. Plan is to try it one night full pelt (alone and not when the clubs are doing it) and see how I come up. Dont mind being last, but dont want to make a t*t of myself either!! Good luck - if you do it let us know and you can shame me into it!

You will not be last. Almost guaranteed. There will be at least one fella in his seventies doing it on a bike that was last serviced in THE seventies.

Managed a 21.9 for 58 miles today, with 2 KOM's and 15 top tens, so I'm off to play on a couple of 10miles TT courses on Saturday and see where I'm at.

Then I'll come home and start looking for pointy helmets!!

    Evidently not!

I'm worried that if the OP turns up and doesn't get a short 20 his first time out, he'll somehow feel that he's 'failed' :?

So I went out and did the 10 mile and 8.5 miles courses near me yesterday.
On the 10 mile I got 9th for my age on Strava and the 12th for 8.5. But I started the 8.5, 35 miles in my ride so I think I could do it quicker if I was fresh.
I know it's not about comparing to other people but we all do it otherwise we would spent 1/2hr looking a sector times on Strava after every ride!

    So why did you?

Strava segments are sooooo subjective. I'm top 10 and top 20 overall, all time, in a couple of 8 or 10 mile segments around town that are flat. Out of a few thousand riders. Doesn't mean I wasn't helped by a good breeze though.

The TT is different. Everyone runs the same course the same day in the same conditions. Who knows what the deal was for those riders that day.

The best confidence you can get is by setting a personal goal and training to exceed it. Say, first try sub 30 minutes. Easy. Game day you know you're good not because you looked at what the other blokes on Strava are up to, but you know you did the best you could.

For what it's worth, I don't TT. But I do ride for 30 min at lunch sometimes. Once a week I'll gag myself from the effort.

I expect no less from you in an ITT. :D

I don't want to put any undue pressure on you, but if we don't see a post within the next month that says you've broken the course record your first time out, we'll all consider you a failure. Also, you have to do it on a road bike. Wearing cut downs and a Sonetti t-shirt

If anyone other than the OP reading this thread is thinking about doing a local '10' - JFDI. They're friendly and a Mrs Doyle equivalent will force tea and cake on you at the end. Generally, no one gives a crap how slow/fast you are, or the bike you turn up on.

I don't really want a hot drink after any form of exertion .. I struggle enough with dissipating heat ... does she have diet coke or something ?

Actually - a tea after a TT is very good ... although I do make sure I've got a bottle of water or recovery drink to have too.

The nearest TT for me is a 4 hour drive away only once every 3 months. And nobody, I mean nobody, locally in a good sized city has a TT group or club. So, I instead setup a flat but windy 10 mile course on Strava near my work. To be fair, I made it a loop. A rectangle essentially with two really long legs and two really short legs. The long legs are the ones typically with and into the wind. So, it would cancel out.

This way I can go out at lunchtime for a try and be able to track my times.

First try, winds were steady at about 7 to 10. Managed a 21 mph avg. I kept the bottle, cages, ugly cell phone mount, front light. No skinsuit. An aero road helmet. Clip-ons bars.

I gave it probably 9/10ths effort as I do have to cleanup and be productive at work after. It was an interesting first try. TT bars are quite twitchy, especially your first time out with some wind.

I'll keep doing it. I don't prefer it to road riding or climbing, but I like trying it out as just another cycling discipline.

It really makes me understand how much a power meter would help. I know for fact what I can do for 27 to 30 minutes, but without seeing it I'll either under or over do it.
