Thanks folks appreciate it and I've also always found Bikeradar reviews to be very useful and so had a look at what they have with regard to racks.

They speak very highly of this:

. . . assuring it fits the bike (which I'm pretty sure it will) is there any reason why I shouldn't get it?

No reason not to get that one.

I have used the Tortec Tour for years http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Tortec-Tour-Rea ... _23931.htm
Cheaper and I think maybe lighter and a bit less bulky. The Expedition would be better if you wanted both rack top bag and panniers at same time though as they would be more spaced out.

I agree with apreading, unless you are going on an expedition get the lightest quality rack that fits your bike properly.

Those rodents also have a liking for my Campag Ergo lever rubber hoods. But they leave my Shimano hoods alone.

They know where quality is...

There is probably latex in the Campag and not in the Shimano

It cost me more than £20 to replace my chewed hoods. I'm also worried the mice may take a fancy to my Brooks leather saddle. So I drape my Campag tourer with old sheets to avoid any more damage.

I found a stash of dry dog food and a load of chewed paper and mouse turds in the bottom drawer of the chest where I keep all my cycling spares. Little buggers! Also once had one nibbling at the HT leads on my wife's car; had to set the trap in the engine compartment to catch the little sod.
  • Slight combined resurrection and hijack (although the op has sorted their decision I think) - I'm about to take the plunge with a pair (or even two) of Ortliebs - what capacity do you recommend f&r? (I appreciate that 'it depends' - but as survey of tourers what do most people use?) I was think 40 litre combined rear and at a later date maybe 20 litre combined front. But see that they also do 70 litre rear - does that just encourage you to take more stuff?

I use Ortlieb Bike Packers on the rear - 40 litres combined - and Carradice Super C Universal on the front - 28 litres combined. I don't use a bar bag or strap anything on top of my rear carrier. That gives me all the space I need for solo cycle camping, including tent, food, cooking gear etc.

The Ortlieb rear panniers are good on their own for groceries and the Carradices are good on their own as rear panniers for B&B tours.

I've got a pair of back rollers in orange which I could part with, seeing I have not used them in the past 12 months. Let me know if they could be of interest and we might work out something
