Unfortunately, I think this is quite common. The ability to use a tape measure is considered by some sufficient skill to be nominated 'The Official Shop Bike Fitter'.
It takes a lot of experience, time and effort to fit correctly, and clearly, not all 'experts' are the same.
Very much this. I paid money for a 'stick the numbers in the software' bike fit [cough]Retul[cough] and ended up being advised to ride 44cm bars - I'm 5.7". Gave it a shot for a while but it was like driving a bus. Went back to 40cm which I'd been riding previously and then I finally got round to seeing a local guy who's an ex Pro and currently runs a youth development team. 2hrs later I was on a bike that fit me like a glove complete with 38mm bars (FSA compact so 40cm c-c from the bar ends but 38mm from the hoods). Incidentally the original fitter (read 'the computer') also recommend 165mm cranks but I stuck with 170mm and when I mention this to the seasoned professional he said to me 'are you riding a track bike? No. 170mm will be ideal'. Best £120 I've ever spent.0
