I specialise in Dabbling ... and I really am crap at everything
I am a crap cyclist, crap snowborder, crap at lifting weights, a crap runner, very crap at rowing,
But .... does it matter, it all depends what your goals are .... I want to do lots of different things ... if I was into althetics I would want to play Daily Thompsons Olympic challenge rather than just to the run in a straight line for 10 seconds every day0 -
VamP wrote:As Webboo says, if you just dabble then it's fine to do lots of different things, but if you want to be reasonably good at a sport, you have to specialize.
Over my life I have been involved at a serious level in rock climbing, skiing, running and now cycling. Never successfully in two at the same time. It's psychologically difficult as well as demanding on resources, particularly money and time.
Many people are able to make a reasonable level in triathlon. Of course most people have one discipline where they are weaker and one which they favour, but I've ridden with some very fast triathletes.0 -
Triathlon is 3 aerobic sports together where as when we were discussing Rock climbing and Cycling. You are talking one strength type sport and one aerobic sport.0

Well he did say in the post I was responding to "Over my life I have been involved at a serious level in rock climbing, skiing, running and now cycling. Never successfully in two at the same time."
But I take your point, in general.0 -
I started out as a rock climber and have climbed to a fairly high standard. I have also raced as a cyclist to a reasonable standard second cat as a vet lots of placings in LVRC races and even been a Yorkshire age group champion at triathlon. Also top ten placings in Vets cross country mountain bike races.
But when trying to mix climbing and Cycling I couldn't keep a high standard in both which is the point I and VamP were making.
As I am now semi retired I have more time to dedicate but I seem to be just achieving a fairly standard degree of crapness in everything but that might be just old age.0
