Ive just started using a chain bath to clean my chain. pretty quick once you get the hang of it.

What do people put in the chain cleaning bath - does it have to be a dedicated chain degreasing fluid - or would something like white spirit do the trick ?

  • Morgan blue chain cleaner, this stuff is brilliant.

  • I do it slightly differently (because i'm tight with my degreaser)

Bike goes on the stand when i get home, I spray morgan blue chain cleaner over the chain and spin it for a bit.
I go and make a cup of coffee and fill a bucket with hot water with washing up water.
I pop the chain cleaner on dry and spin it a few times
Then squeeze in hot soapy water from my bucket and spin through to rince
    Then empty and repeat
Then sponge down the rest of the bike
    Rinse with hose pipe

    Re-lube when dry

Always leaves me with a clean and shiny chain, and a bottle of chain cleaner lasts for months

I've used white spirit for years with no problems.

Also if you have a suitable plastic container you can decant the cruddy white spirit from your chain cleaner and leave aside. Over a few days the gunge will settle and leave you with a clear upper layer that you can then re-use if you pour it carefully.

White spirit certainly works well and will get the chain very clean, however I did find that on applying lube, the chain went black instantly. So if using white spirit, you might want to give it 2 goes with the chain cleaner - once with white spirit then a second with something like citrus degreaser followed by a rinse in water to get everything spotless.

Or just use citrus degreaser in the chain bath, my local supplies store sells 5 litre containers of this for around a tenner.
