So this will be an exciting stage to stop everyone whining.

17km TT from Sallanches to Megève.

No doubt this will cement Froome's lead even further unless to liven things up Prudhomme releases a herd of rabid flamingos onto the course armed with humongous bunting.

But if people try they might find some interest in the fact that Bardet is only 12 seconds ahead of Porte and Quintana is a minute ahead of Porte. There is also interest to be discovered in Mollema being only 26 seconds ahead of Yates.

Knock yourselves out!

1. GBRFROOME Christopher 1 TEAM SKY 77h 25' 10''

I predict it's going to be one long procession from beginning to end! :)

Gougerard has overtaken three riders on the way to the first checkpoint!

Of course the checkpoint may not be working. The second one didn't work pn the first TT, so they stopped using it after the first hour. (On the Race Centre online coverage)
  • Will the GC riders use a road or TT bike?

Or will they change from a TT bike to a road bike after 4km?

It's not a fast route by TdF TT standards - 30 kph or less for the first riders, so probably not much advantage from a TT bike I'd have thought.

I appear to be reading the departures back to front, please ignore this. Gougerard has had a good start though - 2' 08" at third checkpoint.

It'd be a big surprise if they haven't ridden it on both during the year on a training recce and worked out which one is more suited.

Meintjes in 10th place starts at 3:32 uk time, Froome at 3:59 uk time. Fastest time so far is 33:06 for the course, so expect 4:30ish to be the finish time for the course.

Apparently the flying mullet Shane Archbold has withdrawn due to lack of skin left on his body and a broken pelvis. What a wimp!

This looks like a bit of a rest day for some.

This and the next 2 days are going to be tough. Still don't understand the stages that finish after a decent (re.: Megève / Morzine-Avoriaz etc). Is it a pre-requisite maximum number of MTF's?

They wanted to stop Froome doing his boring MTF attacks so mixed the route up. Now there are no boring MTF finish attacks and everyone is bored.

    It's a logistical thing.

32 minutes of full on effort vs 4.5 hours of solid effort with a couple of full on hills at the end. Which is easier to recover from?

He's gone home to prepare for Rio. Bit disappointing not to finish his last Tour

Aerodynamics make a difference even at climbing speeds as seen in the recent GCN video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9BSPZtjJuc.

And, he has no realistic chance of a medal in Rio, surely?

It's a pretty up and down climb so might suit the likes of Mollema, Bardet and Yates slightly more than the more TT specialist guys like Froome and Porte. Still expect those two to be 1 and 2 though.

I think Dumoulin will challenge them. (I'm of the opposite opinion that it suits the specialists)

  • I'm thinking it will be road bikes with clip-on tri-bars as there will be a benefit to be had from the 4K before the climb and the 2k descent at the end. Tri-bars will just means less ballast is needed to get the bikes over the UCI weight limit.

We'll see though when we get pictures

I think Yates will be keeping an eye on Meintjes' time for the White Jersey competition, and eyeing 2nd podium place as well.

Froome will be on his new TT bike apparently, Porte and Mollema on road with bars.

The fact Mollema can use a disk wheel and still make 6.8kg is impressive.

Yates and the Movistar riders to decide on the day

Sky were making a big deal about working with Pinarelloto shave weight off - leaving off a layer of paint etc. So I guess they will be contractually obliged to use it really.

Lovely scenery even if the chopper is grounded.

I reckon this is good cow country.

These are said to be joining the World Tour next year. Look for them to be nullifying the mountain stages with their train.
