Is an XC bike the natural option for a roadie?

If you were a roadie looking to get into mountain biking would you get a racy hardtail as a first bike? Or would you consider a more all round trail bike that might be a bit more forgiving for someone inexperienced around mud and roots and rocks and muck and the like? Obviously the answer is "ride as many bikes as you can", but it'd be nice for opinions as well.

I would go for something more trail oriented unless you are planning longer rides out on milder terrain (or are highly skilled) as the lower weigh and more efficient riding position will help. The geometry of a modern trail bike adds stability and control on the downs and in the rough stuff, yet still can climb well.
What would be your budget?0 -
You can't really spin a MTB like you would a road bike so unless you are planning lots of flat, fast XC or racing I would go for a more user friendly FS trail bike.0

Pick the bike that will best suit the tracks you want to ride, as the nicest XC bike in the world could be hard going on hard terrain.0
