Another win for someone from the break or will they be chased down by the sprinter teams?

Flat, but it looks like there are some tricky bends in the last 2km, so positioning will be crucial if there is going to be a mass, bunched sprint.

Well before the cameras start to roll on today's stage, the route heads through Popoli ...

    416.jpg

... then we get that early Cat2 climb, which will be of great interest to those who are battling for the Maglia Azzurra (Cunego et al)

The three riders in the early break - Patrick Grestch (Ag2r-La Mondiale), Stefan Küng (BMC) and Jay McCarthy (Tinkoff). Team Nippo are chasing so that they don't miss out.

Placings over the Cat2 Svolte de Popoli as follows:

    1. Kung 2. McCarthy 3. Gretsch (all from the early break) then 4. Wellens 5. Cunego 6. Visconti.

With that MTF yesterday that could mean Wellens has overtaken Cunego for the KOM blue jersey.

    Yep Wellens is KOM leader

Front group of 55, inc all the main favourites, now have 2m19s over the rest. 45km covered. 38.2kph avg speed.

If the pace stays high it could tricky for the sprinters and their teams as they decide whether it is going to be worth the effort today.

Kung's gone again and has 1:08 on the GC peloton

Much more varied split of PTP picks today but the top four are:

    Greipel - 36%
    Kittel - 25%
    Demare - 14%
    Nizzolo - 11%

Others include Ewan, Hofland, Modolo, and Lars Bak.

Several GC guys in 2nd peloton. Ulissi, Zakarin, Chaves, Uran. 2 mins behind peloton 1.

After 80km Kung, Domont, Ciccone, Denifl, Koshevoy & Martinez have 2'30" on what's looking like a single peloton after that early activity when sprinters and significant others were dropped.

100km to go and the breakaway group has 3mins on the rest. This stage is very similar to S7 of the 2014 race. Nacer Bouhanni won on that day in a bunch sprint ahead of Nizzolo and Mezgec.

Speed the peloton are going up the last Cat4 climb, the Valico Della Somma, no-one is going to get detached. Breakaway only has 1'30", which probably has something to do with it. They won't want a catch too soon as this will just encourage lots of attacks later on.

Edit - Cunego is trying to gain a few points to hold on to the blue jersey by going off the front of the main field.

Cunego didn't succeed. The little prince will cede the jersey to Wellens.

Cannnondale hammering it, while Kittel slips off the back. Kung still out front...

This finish is where Cummings took that win at TA, non? So maybe Cannondale setting up Navardaskas (who's launched similar attacks before)...

Break caught. Kittel made it back to the peloton... some dodgy bends on the run into the finish...

Grielpel & his team right at the front as they head for the nasty bends.

Greipel takes it. Lotto-Soudal having a decent Giro...
  • On a plate for Ewan and he didn't show anything there. Disappointing.

    Greipel looking strong.

    Hat trick for Lotto-Soudal!

Good win for Greipel that. Didn't panic, used his experience then his power. Nothing straight forward about it at all.

200m from the end, Greipel engages beast mode and makes everyone else look like they're stationary as he disappears over the line.
Im surprised Greipel doesn't bend his bike when accelerating with such explosive power.

Strung out in single file for 20kms followed by an over cluttered bunch sprint.
    Flipping odd stage.
Tomorrow, we have a Vuelta stage. :)
